Hey! Want to get to know me better?

I grew up in North Caldwell, went to Binghamton, and figured I was done with Jersey.

Then I fell for Manhattan. Taught math at The Dwight School for ten years. Got married in 2004, had my first kid while we were still living in the city.

Somewhere in there I started Mommybites, mostly to find other moms who felt as lost as I did. It turned into a real business and a real community. Sold it to a media company in 2016.

During that time, my family made the move from Manhattan to Summit.

I grew up in this state and I still felt completely out of my depth. I didn't understand the towns, the tradeoffs, or what life would actually look like on the other side of that move.

We raised our kids in Summit, then later in Madison. Slowly, it became home in a way I didn't see coming.

After Mommybites, I wanted to build something again. Something that let me help people through big changes, the way I wished someone had helped me.

Real estate turned out to be exactly that.

Now I mostly work with people making the same move I made: buyers coming from Manhattan, Hoboken, and Jersey City, families upsizing, people getting ready to downsize.

I'm not here to sell you a dream home. I'm here to help you figure out what's actually next, and make the process feel less overwhelming than it felt for me. taken in Madison, New Jersey by @lauradeutschnj

We know one day we’ll make the jump out of Hoboken...
So step one is finding a town we love just as much as the Mile Square! Chatham was first up with the help from @lauradeutschnj

We saw some homes, learned so much about the towns like the difference between borough and township (we found out borough is probably more our speed due to us loving walkability) and so much more thanks to Laura.

Then explored the town and popped into @quartetchatham to shop and @meetyouatcrew for our much needed coffee fix.

Trying to find a town we’ll love as much as Hoboken isn’t easy…

But Madison had that small town, warm community feel we’re looking for… plus a downtown that honestly surprised me. @lauradeutschnj showed us two homes giving us glimpse into the reality of what you get at different price points… and I’m realizing I might not have full teardown energy with two kids 😅

But the location, the downtown, the community… I get the appeal. Loved popping into @wish_madison @forumcoffeeus & @totsmadison

Here’s what the last two weeks looked like across Union County. Every town I track is still a seller’s market, but things are definitely calming down from the summer. Fall generally brings out fewer buyers, mortgage rates certainly aren’t helping, and one in four homes on the market right now has had a price reduction.

You’ll see “months of inventory” on every slide, so here’s what it means. It’s how long it would take for every home currently for sale to sell if nothing new came on the market. Anything under four months is a seller’s market, four to six is balanced, and over six is a buyer’s market.

Right now, the towns I track range from about half a month in New Providence to 3.6 months in Springfield, so every one of them is still on the seller’s side, even as things cool off.

Swipe through to see how Berkeley Heights, Cranford, Fanwood, New Providence, Scotch Plains, Springfield, Summit and Westfield compare. Don’t see your town? DM me and I’ll send you the numbers. taken in Summit, New Jersey by @lauradeutschnj

This might be some of the best sushi in West Orange, and you could drive right past this place without even noticing it!

Kim’s Sushi is on Eagle Rock Avenue, and I have my brother to thank for introducing me to this little gem!

From the outside, it doesn’t look like much, but walk inside and you’ll find red walls, a full dining room, and a sushi chef working his magic right behind the counter.

We started lunch with a crisp salad and creamy dressing, both free as long as you order at least $10 worth of food. Then came the sushi, including this amazing tower of tuna called the Volcano roll, which is officially my new favorite! And the other rolls were incredible too.

They also always bring out a little something on the house, which I love because I get to try something new! And of course, free oranges for dessert.

This is definitely one of those places that once you discover it, you’ll keep coming back.

Now I want to know, who has the best sushi in your town? Tell me where I need to go next! taken in Kims sushi by @lauradeutschnj

Madison just got crafty! 🧶🎨

Meet Unraveled, a brand new shop in downtown Madison that's all about getting creative, trying something new, and taking a little break from the everyday hustle.

Owner Danielle is a mental health therapist with a passion for crafting who decided to turn her dream of opening a shop into reality. And I love that she actually did it!

Whether you're a total beginner or already love crafting, there's something for everyone. Think embroidery, cross-stitch, paint-by-numbers, diamond art, and more, with kits starting around $16.

I tried one myself, and I have to say, there really is something about crafting that brings an instant sense of calm and joy.

Danielle is also hosting some really fun craft nights, including Witch Bells and Margaritas, which already sold out!

Want to check it out? She's hosting an Open Crafts Night on November 5th, so grab a friend and get creative!

They found me on Instagram, ready to leave Jersey City for the suburbs.

They just didn’t know which town.

They were ready for the move, and they had a dog, so a big backyard was at the top of the list.

So we spent several weekends together going through the towns they were considering, and I got a good feel for what they wanted in a house and in a town.

Then I found a house in Scotch Plains that fit.

I called the listing agent and got them in early. They were the first ones to see it, and we put in a competitive offer right away.

And they got it.

One thing they wrote in their review stuck with me:

“Laura was so helpful in that she was knowledgeable about the different towns we were considering and so easily understood what we were looking for in both a house and a town.”

I honestly think the town matters as much as the house. I made the same move out of Manhattan years ago and remember how overwhelming it felt to choose.

Now they’re settled in and enjoying the backyard they dreamed of. They just told me they’re hosting 35 people for Thanksgiving, something they never could have imagined in their apartment.

If you’re in Hoboken or Jersey City and the towns are starting to blur together, DM me TOWNS. I’ll help you figure out which ones are actually worth your weekends. taken in Scotch Plains, New Jersey by @lauradeutschnj

There’s a brand new shop on Main Street in Madison, and it’s three shops in one.

The Market House opened last month at 62 Main Street and was created by a mother and daughter duo.

They have fresh flowers available Thursdays through Saturdays, plus a beautifully curated shop with stylish home décor, unique gifts, clothing, and lots of little finds that make you want to keep browsing.

They also host creative workshops like floral arranging, watercolor, and collage.

Their fall floral arranging workshop is Tuesday, October 20, and it’s $70. by @lauradeutschnj

126 Hickson Drive, New Providence

Just under $1.8M for a brand new custom home with 6 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms, and 1 half bath.

This one has so much going for it.

A gorgeous kitchen with quartz countertops and Thermador appliances.

A family room with a floor to ceiling marble fireplace.

A spacious primary suite with a spa like bathroom, private office, and custom closet.

A finished third floor.

A finished lower level.

And a beautiful backyard and patio.

There is so much flexible space in this house, but it still feels warm and really livable.

Listing courtesy of Marco Formosa from Lois Schneider and is currently in attorney review.

The elephant in the room? Mortgage rates.

Yes, they’re over 7% again.

And yes, that can make buying feel a whole lot less appealing than it did when rates were sitting in the low 6s earlier this year.

But here’s the thing: nobody knows where rates are going next.

If the monthly payment doesn’t work for you, that matters. I would never tell someone to stretch beyond what they can comfortably afford.

But if you can afford the payment and the only thing stopping you is waiting for the “perfect” rate, you could end up waiting a very long time.

In the meantime, life keeps moving.

Maybe you need more space. Maybe you want less space. Maybe you want a different town. Maybe the right house finally comes along.

Those things matter too.

I’m curious, what rate are you waiting for?

Tell me in the comments. taken in Madison, New Jersey by @lauradeutschnj

Trying to squeeze in a few more ice cream walks before the weather turns 🍦

One of my favorite things about downtown Madison is how lively it always feels, especially when you can walk into town, grab a cone, and sit outside for a bit.

And every town has that one ice cream place everyone knows.

In Summit, it’s Magic Fountain.
In Chatham, it’s Scoops.
In Madison, McCool’s is definitely one of the go to spots.

Now I want to know yours.
