My baby boy!!! It has been so nice getting updates from Zeus’ handler, a young guy studying Broadcasting and Media Studies at Mount Royal University in Alberta. (I was given the go ahead from him to share these details! 🙃)

Any time I see a heart unexpectedly, I think of my dad. In his last years, he used to leave little felt ones around the house for my mom—the ones you buy from the craft section of the dollar store! He also exuded such kindness, compassion, and love, so it just seems fitting.

Today, on what would have been his 70th birthday, I made sure to keep my eyes peeled for hearts, and to follow any nudges of places to check (like my shampoo bottle, or the back of the can of my Thirsty Buddha drink). Here are the ones I saw today (plus one I decided to get inked my wrist, permanently as a little reminder he’s always with me, and to lead with love!).

Of course, you could argue that there are hearts in many places, so perhaps seeing one isn’t some spiritual sign from him per se. But, I choose to believe what feels good to believe. And either way, I think it’s a great reminder that what you look for and focus your energy on, you will find. So why not look for the good? Why not look for the love? ❤️🙃

Zeus and I participated in @cnibguidedogs annual Pup Crawl fundraiser! Today, alongside some of his fellow future guide dogs — and doggy friends — we banked some kms followed by a waterfront refreshment at the @waterfrontwarehouse! A great way to kick off the weekend.

Yesterday future guide dog Zeus had a photoshoot (thank you @mjphotographicshfx) with some shots taking place at @halifax_lancers. Upon entry of the barn Zeus, was momentarily taken aback by the horses, but with lots of encouragement, treats (of course!) and a no-pressure approach, he got comfortable very quickly! 🙃

While it will be hard to say goodbye to Mr. Zeus when he goes off to formal guide training, I know that he has the opportunity to make a life-changing difference for someone with sight loss, and that is always at the forefront of my mind.

Are you interested in raising a future guide dog pup in Halifax? Do you have the time to socialize them and introduce them to the world around them? (All which would be done with lots of hands on support from me, the local Puppy Development Trainer.)

Any time I have the opportunity to do a blindfolded walk with a guide dog in training, it taps me back into the greater “why” behind my day to day of working with future guide dog puppies… to have a positive, life changing impact on people living with with sight loss.

Here are a couple clips of a recent blindfolded walk while I was in Carleton Place. The dog and I are going at a pretty good pace, and you can hear my colleague, who is a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor, letting me know the cues to use as well as some general guidance. You’ll see in second slide that the dog was trying to take me onto the road to avoid the obstacles ahead as I’d told him “find the way” (which is good!), but I was clearly hesitant to go along with him as I could feel I was no longer going straight and likely off the sidewalk. That’s when we took a pause for some more guidance for me before trying again so I could be more successful. 🙃

So much trust goes into the relationship between a handler and their guide dog, and it is a bond so strong and special that I can only imagine. 💖

I’m feeling very grateful to have the opportunity to do such meaningful work that both challenges me and brings me joy regularly — all alongside an amazing team of humans, and doggos. 🐶🦮💖🙏🏼

(And of course, you know I’ve got to put a plug in for puppy raiser recruitment… if you’re interested in volunteering to raise a future guide dog, let’s chat! There are both short and long term positions available. And yes, it is hard to see them go off to the Canine Campus in Carleton Place, but they’re off to bigger and better things with formal guide dog training and hopefully to be someone’s eyes. And hey, chances are I could probably get you another puppy real soon to help fill the void if you’d like. 😘) by @lauraekenn
