Q: Do you have a childhood memory that shaped your work?

A: It goes back to living in Tokyo for a few years while my father was on sabbatical at Keio University. My parents and sisters Karen, Midori and Katherine and I took a day trip to Higashi Chichibu, a village where artisans have been making washi paper from mulberry for 1,300 years.

The impact of that entire day stayed with me all these years- watching the craftspeople pull huge trays through vats of fiber and water, forming something so thin and so strong.

But there was more to it than the papermaking. We'd brought food for a picnic, and along the way discovered mikans (oranges like clementines) growing wild. After picking some, we wandered into a neighborhood and found a patch of grass to sit and eat. Within minutes, residents had come out to welcome us and offer their hospitality.

Years later, Japanese paper is woven into many of my paintings. And the memories of all those experiences, including the craft, the landscape, the unexpected kindness of strangers, are woven into the concepts and images too. #highashichichibu #keio by @laurafayer

Always fun to revisit some memories of me as a child in Japan during my dad's second sabbatical year at Keio. Large canvases are both a pleasure and a challenge. A pleasure because I can dive into the whole field and create an entire atmosphere where I feel like I'm living and engaging with the environment. A challenge because the scale makes it harder to make disparate elements cohesive.

I'm thinking more lately about breathing room and how to allow spaces that retain their interest but still allow you to both focus and exhale.

For me, the answer is always in the dialogue between quiet, atmospheric washes and the tactile presence of the woodblock-inspired marks.

I'm going to admit, this size/scale was a bit of a challenge for me as it's three times as long as it is high at 36x96". I like to think you can read it from left to right and that it tells a story.

My family has long had roots in Queens. I don’t recall all the details but I know my grandmother commuted to Hunter College high school in Manhattan from Queens before getting her degree in engineering from Cornell in 1922, and my great grandfather Charles Fayer worked in X-ray technology in a LIC office of Wapler Electric.

So it’s nice to have a painting in a lobby of my (now) home borough of Queens. This is at a new development in Willets Point. taken in Willets Point, Queens by @laurafayer

My painting earned a seat at the table. Well-- almost! This triptych is part of the Art in Embassies program for the next three years. This is in Singapore at the Ambassador's residence.

There's a beautiful garden right outside and it seems like a lovely space. I'm glad to be a part of this wonderful program! by @laurafayer

This painting is going into the corporate collection at MUFG, a global Japanese bank, and I keep thinking about how happy my dad would be about that.

All of my connection with Japan started with my dad. When he was a young man, his first visits to Japan were during R&R trips to Tokyo while he served as supply officer in Korea with the US Army. Shortly thereafter, he began studying Japanese and eventually became an expert in Japanese labor economics-teaching at Brandeis, with several year-long sabbaticals in Japan. We went as a family (7 kids!) a few times for a year each time to live in Tokyo while my dad was at Keio. My dad did deep dives into Japanese art, while my mom, who loved all things Japanese as well, was more curious about traditional Japanese crafts.

My dad became friends with Honjo, an artist who also owned a gallery and we visited often to see his work alongside the other artists he represented.
With my mom, we went to craft exhibits at Japanese department stores and watched videos on the Japanese "living treasures" (artisans honored for keeping traditions alive)

I think my love of woodcut-inspired marks comes from these formative childhood years in Japan and it's nice to have it all come full circle!
