One year without you.

I’m permanently changed. Parts of me feel taped together, and I’ve accepted that will likely always be the case.

There is no amount of time that I would have been able to accept as the end, and the emotions I’ve felt in the last twelve months would be inevitable.

I try to be thankful you had a well-lived life filled with so much that many dream about, but damn…I miss you; I still get a wave of nausea every time I remember you’re gone.

I’m taking care of your little girl; I am doing my absolute best to live an extraordinary life, prioritizing my happiness, and hoping you’re along for the ride.

I didn’t know the depth of love until I lost you, and I’ll continue to see that as a privilege many never get to know.

I’m really grateful we never left words unsaid, and despite not having the chance to say goodbye, I have peace in my heart knowing my final spoken words to you were “I love you very much”.

I’m saving the biggest hug for you.

New Year’s Eve feels so weird this year.

A part of me wants to pause time, so I can remain in the final year my dad and I both lived in together. It feels scary to close that book honestly, and I’m trying to navigate it.

I’m so fortunate that I had so much time with him, in the last few years in particular. I’m lucky that I worked for a wonderful firm that allowed me the flexibility to work remotely for prolonged periods of time, so that I could drive to Ontario for summer ‘23 and ‘24 with my dog (my dad’s grandbaby) and with the help of my brothers, to soak in a lot of family time.

My stepmom and I planned out the first trip in 2023, it was a complete surprise for my dad, and we pulled it off perfectly together. My dog, Libby, has car anxiety and my dad knew I’d never fly her in the cargo of an airplane. Thus, my dad never thought he would ever have her at his home. I was able to bring her to Ontario so she could spend time with my dad, stepmom, and their rescue dogs while we were all under one roof…two years in a row.

The morning after the successful 2023 surprise, my dad teared up while we were having coffee together and he said to me “I think this is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me”… I will hold onto that memory forever.

Starting a new year without one of my absolute favourite humans in this world is SO hard, but I promise myself I won’t change a couple core aspects of who I am; I will make sure I set aside time for those I love, and I’ll continue to romanticize all the things I think are beautiful.
