I hosted a community member for grief ritual this past month, and am filled with gratitude and awe from witnessing and helping make home for / make offering to the deep web of relationships that we all move in here.

This work is an active, functional practice of music in its most core form - sound waves, dynamics, rhythm, and repetition. It is both a digestion of my entire education and lived experience, as well as in-time digestion through my body / our body / the body of the human experience of feeling. Honest, holy, tender, and only possible because we are all made from the same raw elements, as is the land, and greater ecosystems that we are in relationship with. Legacies, libraries handed down slowly over generations, stored in our mineral, blood, water, breath, fire…

It’s important for me to open a door here to let folks know that this is an offering. At the same time, this format, this platform, is not a way to make transmissions that need community, thresholds of entering into and exiting out of, and literally vibrating air to actually receive. This medium isn’t suitable for healing traditions nor music, but what we can do here is to create invitation in and then take our own time to make a reel real by integrating seeds of thought back into the land by translating them through our body. Slowly, and with lived repetition.

Looking forward greatly to a fall of concerts and ceremony, music and medicine. by @laurelpremo

Three collaborative concerts in the UP are coming up in the beginning of October, where I’ll get to work with Malagasy musicians Mikahely Razafy and David Rajaonary, alongside the artistic director of the Northwoods Music Collaborative, Evan Premo.

October 8th / Marquette / Marquette Regional History Center
October 10th / Houghton / Walker Arts and Humanities Center
October 11th / Crystal Falls / Fortune Lake Camp

Amongst other lush sounds, I’m particularly looking forward to our weaving of plant-based chordophones, in Mikahely’s valiha (a tube-like zither made from a single stalk of bamboo / the national instrument of Madagascar) and my gourd banjo.
