Sweetest boy who ever lived. Strongest man. Best person.

You should have turned 40 years old yesterday. I made sure to eat a whole pizza in your honor, joined by both an old friend and a new friend.

I carry your memory and your lessons with me to each new place I roam. I celebrate every moment I was lucky enough to spend in your presence. I miss you eternally. I love you forever.

Thank you for making the world better. Thank you for making me better. Thank you for everything, Eric. taken in Bristol, United Kingdom by @lauren_wk

I know I’ve dreamed you
A sin and a lie
I have my freedom
But I don’t have much time
Faith has been broken
Tears must be cried
Let’s do some living

I am lucky enough to be the caretaker of these beautiful babies after their previous owner died suddenly. She was an avid collector of shoes. A few years ago, I promised her husband that I would take the best care of them—and that this piece of her would continue to see the world.

Welcome to my 2024 grief tour. You have been warned. taken in London, United Kingdom by @lauren_wk

Yesterday, I held your body in my arms for the very last time. It turns out that “as much time as you need” actually means about an hour and a half.

After people die, it is said, they aren’t in their bodies anymore.

But as I cradled your face and buried mine into your cold neck, I still felt you. When I held your hands and stroked your hair, I didn’t belong anywhere else.

Your body was a part of you. Every inch of it was my comfort and my safety and my home.

I wish I could have stayed forever.

I miss you so much. I am lost. by @lauren_wk

It’s bittersweet to see the beautiful outpouring of love for Eric—the tributes, the memories, the photos and drawings and videos.

Eric oozed talent. He was a creator and a collaborator and a problem solver and a muse, always offering up his creative energy to anyone who could use it. He was an artist in every sense of the word.

He was outspoken for justice, even when it put him at risk. His generosity was never dependent upon who would see it. He didn’t do things for credit, but because he cared about all living creatures. His empathy and compassion never wavered.

Eric made the world a better place every day. In so many ways, he was larger than life. But in so many other ways, he just *was* life.

Eric knew my favorite snacks, and he always kept them stocked. He knew to hide some so I wouldn’t eat too much at once. He knew how much I loved it when he took my shoes off for me at night. He knew just how each of the animals needed attention. He would change into pajama pants early because he knew I wanted to snug. He always suggested the perfect movie. He always understood my Frasier references—and I always understood his.

To his great chagrin, he knew how much I loved watching him sleep in the mornings. These were some of the most peaceful moments of my life. He hated when I took photos of him sleeping. I’m so glad I did anyway. by @lauren_wk

How to describe grief?

A vast emptiness, stretching beyond the farthest star? A floating heaviness that won’t find its grounding, not ever again. A perpetually cold place that looks deceptively like home. Walking alone forever, wishing for any other way.

A cavernous ache. A never-ending fall. The loneliest dream?

Grief is 42 hours. 42 hours since I last saw your beautiful face—your loving eyes, your perfect smile. Since your familiar voice calmed my fears. Since I impatiently pulled your jacket buttons apart—hiding in the warmth of your body, the softness of your skin, the safety of your being—the world around us fading from existence. Only your arms could make me feel that way.

42 hours since you promised to send letters and doodles in the mail during our time apart. Since I reminded you that we would soon be happily settling into our own Madonna Inn suite—a fantasy we shared since the day we realized that our decade-long friendship had evolved into more.

So many days behind us now. Weeks, months, years. I beg each moment to reconsider passing by. Moments are the things that turned 10 minutes to 10 hours… to 42 hours. Moments are the thieves that pull you further and further from my grasp—each more devastating than the last.

If I know one thing about Eric, it’s that he has always left everything better than he found it—every person, every animal, every place. But I don’t know how to be better now. And I don’t know how to want to be. Eric was too good for this world, and I wish it wasn’t so hard for him to believe that he deserved more.

I’m so proud of you, Eric—my best friend, my sweetheart, my family. I will love you until my very last breath. And I will honor your legacy in every part of my being until that restful moment comes. by @lauren_wk
