SUTA to 70 years

I’ll never be able to adequately describe what marching with the 70th anniversary Phantom Regiment Alumni Corps has meant to me and so many others. When I walked off the field of my age-out performance in 2011, I explicitly told myself “this is the happiest I’ll ever be,”
and for a long, long time that was true. But at some point, through time, healing, therapy, and several new robust and supportive communities, I began to expand as a person. Into someone capable of even more joy, more love, and more forgiveness than I could have as a 22 year old who was desperate to be “enough”.

It has been an utter gift to step on that field with the capacity for joy and self-love that only comes with maturity. And to share that with others. Thank you to every alumni who came back and shared their own stories of redemption and renewal, to reclaim what we love so much about this corps. We had a week of the kind of safety, security, and connectedness we only find here. To feel the power of that hornline run straight through your body, the crush of the cheers of the crowd, a friend to guide you in every degree of your periphery, and the collective memory of all the laughs and struggles forgotten after years away.

This has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my adult life. I can’t thank you all enough, and I miss you all so much already.

We are the Phantom Regiment, we are, we are.

I don’t know how I got so lucky to have such incredible people in different spheres of my life, but what an absolute joy it was to merge those worlds last night!
Cheers to the best people on earth, who go all in for a silly time (we got the traitor knight at Medieval Times 😈) and bring such richness to every moment together ❤️🏰❤️ by @laurengburns

Ballet Folklorico de México.

Huge thanks to @asgard88 for making this a priority on our trip! This was a display of the many different regional folk dances of Mexico, telling the story of Mexico’s history through song and dance, all in the stunning Palacio de Bellas Artes. At times delightfully funny and wacky, and others passionate and beautiful, we had no clue what to expect and loved every second.

Comida Bonita
CDMX

1-4) Expendio de Maiz. The best concha I’ve ever had with fresh cream, honey, and cafe de olla, chicken tinga quesadilla and the best mezcal I’ve ever had, and huitlacoche sope (I think it was a sope? Thick blue corn masa cake 👍).

5-6) Odette ❤️ Of my order, my favorite was the plain croissant and the raspberry kouign amann, but the best bite was hands down Liz’s pavlova!

7-8) My favorite neighborhood taqueria, Los Condes, near where we stayed. Those tacos campechanos 🤤

9) Went back to our favorite neighborhood breakfast spot, El Cafe-to

10-11) Gonzalitos. That Barbacoa taco was insane, so I get why it is Michelin recommended, but waiting 40+ minutes for our food while the tables around us got turned over twice before we ever got a bite was not it lol. And poor Jason had to ask 4 times for his horchata. Took an hour to get it, and they charged us for 3 😅 So if you go, don’t sit at the far tables closest to the street.

12-13) Another neighborhood joint specializing in guac-henge and strawberry horchata

14) Honestly, Odette and Rosetta are great, but this apple pastry from Pan BellezArtesanal was perhaps my favorite 😅 And the tamal! Chicken in amarillito (a Oaxaca style yellow chile mole sauce that was incredible)

15) Post-Xinú marg

16) Horchata in the park with company

Perhaps my favorite keepsake from Japan, my goshuinchō

Goshuin are seals received as evidence of pilgrimage to shrines and temples, handwritten or pasted into special books called goshuinchō. I’ll forever be grateful to Liz for being as into this as I was!

Some Goshuin are pre-made, but most are done by hand in front of you. Photos of the process are usually not permitted, but it’s such a delight to watch the calligrapher’s unique personality come through in their writing. And it doesn’t show in photos, but the way the vermillion and black ink play together on the page is fascinating! I love looking at the different styles of calligraphy side by side. There’s something so magical about a moment in time captured so individually.

Photo 2) top book from Kitain Temple in Kawagoe (our first Goshuin, and mine tragically got water damage. I was too mortified to present a damaged book to further temples, so it only has one stamp), bottom left from Kiyomizu Kannon-do in Ueno, Tokyo, and bottom right from Ueno Toshogu Shrine, Tokyo.
I kept separate goshuinchō for shrines and temples, final count was temples: 10 and shrines: 13!

When we were standing in line to get goshuin at Itsukushima shrine in Miyajima, a very sweet lady behind me asked (all in Japanese) where I got my book from, then though a translation app proceeded to explain to us that when we die, to place our goshuinchō in our coffins with us, and all the different kami of the temples and shrines we visited would look after us 🥹❤️.

That was perhaps the most surprising thing about shrine and temple visits for me. Just how welcoming people were and how eager they were to include you in their traditions and practices. I was worried that as obvious foreigners, we would feel like interlopers visiting these sacred places. But I can’t tell you how often an eager local came up to us to make sure we knew to “go ring the bell!” or watched us perform the water cleansing ritual and commented “😱 Sugoi! Perfect!” or simply offered to take our photo. We met so many lovely people at these sacred places, and I love having these books to remind me of their kindness!

Women of Business. Business Class Baddies.

Last minute upgrade was only $900! And considering I used points to cover the whole base fare, not bad at all. My seat had hella crumbs and the luxe headphones didn’t work, so I wouldn’t pay $7k for it, but damn if it wasn’t worth it just to have a not-sore back and not-swollen legs. We had so much fun in our little condos in the sky.

We also got access to the Japan Airlines Lounge, which was amazing considering how hungover I was from our last hurrah ✌️

Last pic is the souvenir haul! Not even including the gifts I got for others 🙃

Last day in Japan

Last bento and beer on the Shinkansen, last train snack, last meal, and last hurrah. Liz found the coolest listening bar and I can’t believe they played that song! Lol

Our hotel had a rooftop spa, and sitting in the outdoor bath with the cold rain on my face was just what I needed.
