@coplandhouse with @magpie.duo and @jamesdiazmusic ~~~ there’s certain places that have an instant familiarity, like I’ve been there before, or am meant to be, and can become a sudden home, a refuge and place for meaning and a few roots

a creative, communal, gentle strength is an unmatched power

thank you @banffcentre for uplifting and allowing me to experience this kind of strength. this is where I finally saw my work for what it is and maybe what it could be someday — all thanks to this cohort and this place.

I’ve never felt this strong 💛 by @laurenjconroy

Is it weird that sometimes I wish I made things more like nils frahm? I used to wish it a lot more, but it faded some years ago and now it’s back. taken in Books and Other Found Things by @laurenjconroy

🐦‍⬛ announcing Magpie Duo’s 25•26 season

This season, we’re expanding our sound in some very exciting ways! Join us for concerts with viola, clarinet, and a big helping of synthesizers on new and old pieces.

We have some pretty extreme ❤️‍🔥 repertoire on deck, including Morton Feldman’s 75-minute “For John Cage”, Jörg Widmann’s hyperexpressive Schumann pastiche “Es war einmal…”, and more 🎹.

We’re also very excited to be heading to two residencies this year, starting with a week in @avalochfarmmusicinstitute 🌲 this September ☀️ and three weeks at the @banffcentre 🇨🇦 this winter ❄️.

We hope to see you at some (or if you’re feeling adventurous, all) of these events this season! More details to come! 🐦‍⬛

reflecting on the @blackboxnewmusic 24-25 season with a full heart and hope for how music can bring community and wellbeing.

two shows from this past year (photographed above) have brought some crystallized memories — our recent @ps21chatham Julius Eastman show with the inspiring and thoughtful @kmchoreo + our @bangonacan Long Play show at @irondaleensemble ⭐️

I have been wondering how some art sits in a particular way — memories of powerful and moving artistic moments land with a weight, they feel full and robust, but remain so light and effortless in my mind. I wonder if this type of musical or artistic recollection is a component of sustained wellbeing and connection.

some musics from these shows that are still sitting with me:

Gérard Grisey (1946-1998) — “Périodes”

Julius Eastman (1940-1990) — “Joy Boy” + “Buddha”

Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) — “quia ergo femina”

Peter Maxwell Davies (1934-2016) — “8 Songs for a Mad King”
