BABY'S FIRST GEARS

I've been really starting to dive deeper into CAD these past few weeks so I could really start to understand mechanical designs and parts. I'm getting SO CLOSE to figuring out how to take my ideas from thought to reality.

Been a minute since I posted. Last week, while talking to my boss about anything other than our immediate job, she suggested I try to make items that parents would buy for their kids. She's a sport mom and sent me a tik tok to a hype chain/sports team necklace. It seemed like a simple enough shape to practice modeling with.

I started out in Plasticity and while I eventually got what I wanted, I started to learn the limits of the software, being that it's a direct modeling nurbs tool. And for those who don't know what that means, imagine building something out of clay. If you decide you don't like a decision you made and you're in too deep, you can't go back and undo the work. You either stick with the new shape or rebuild it. Plasticity is great for concrete thinkers like myself.

Much to my dismay, I realized I could not improve my imprevious work because of the software limitations, so I finally started learning OnShape. And let me tell you, I was mad. Not that I haven't worked in CAD software before, I just really enjoy the workflow of Plasticity and had already put hours into learning it. Slowly but surely, I'm learning OnShape. I suppose it's for the best, as this will set me up for more mechanical designs down the road.

Also, I printed my test piece in PLA silk and lemme tell you... I freaking hate PLA silk. I'm so over it. Anyway, back to my computer I go.

Also, if you see a mess at the bottom of my printer or smudges on the glass... No, you didnt.

Swipe to see the before picture.

The peg from my water bottle fell out at the beginning of summer when I dropped it in the parking lot at work. I don't usually carry it around at work and it just sits on my desk, so I always meant to either get around to either buying a new bottle or fixing it. But it seemed dumb to buy a new bottle when I have only had this one for a year and when this one is still functional.
I just got home today from vacation which involved a mind numbing ten-hour car ride. I meant to sit down at my computer to do my grocery order. And for some reason I immediately thought, "oh I can pull this together really quickly."

Took some measurements, put them in Plasticity and I had a replacement peg in no time! And the handle is still detachable. It's amazing how a little knowledge of 3D modeling and 3D printing can provide such simple solutions!

I want to start sharing more of the things is 3D print. My goal ultimately is to become proficient at 3D Modeling so I can create my own designs, but it's still fun to print stuff already out there.

Finished this a week or two ago. The bike and "hello spring" sign are its own design. The pig and veggies were extra additions! All of the files were found on Maker World. I colored the pieces with acrylic markers, but if I needed it top quality I would have used all different color filaments... Also, definitely would have colored before assembling...

As you can see, Panda approves.

Want something printed? Let's talk.

Had a blast today throwing clay for the first time ever! Turns out I throw lefty intuitively. Can't wait to see how the firing and glaze comes out in a few weeks. Had a lot of un experiencing this alongside my family!

Check out @hex_pottery she's a great teacher! @mudclaystudionj

I built a Haunted House for my cat, Fudge. Only used cardboard, a ridiculously dull x-acto knife, hot glue, and tempera paint. I haven't made anything in a while for the sake of making and well... It all feels very wholesome, something I feel like I've been missing from my life for a while now. Everything has been so serious and dire, but this was fun simply because I wanted it to be.

Happy Halloween, ya filthy animals.

Photo dump: stuff I made in high school.
1. Flower Clock (not my design but I copied it really well)
2./3. Adirondack chair. Got the plans from some website for free. Dad helped me finish it up while I was at camp by adding the cross brace in the back and painting it.
4./5. Pyrography portrait for Mom and Dad's 25th anniversary
6./7. Spider-Man stool. I still love that thing.
