Cookeville Leisure Services Department

The Heart of the City Playground will be closed beginning Tuesday, September 8, immediately following Labor Day, for play surface renovations.

Many have seen the patches and deterioration of the current playground surfacing due to damage and age. In response, Cookeville City Council has approved funding in this year’s budget for this repair, allowing replacement of the surface with a new one like the one on the new playground at Cane Creek Park near the Splashpad. The new Forever Lawn surface will be compliant with playground safety standards and will feature a cooling agent to make it more enjoyable for the community.

Department director Chad McDonald says, “The closure dates were selected with the goal of minimizing disruption; we wanted to wait until school was back in session. We are grateful to the City Council for their decision to support this project. We have also been in contact with the original project champions and they plan additional refurbishment work throughout the fall, winter, and spring as time and budget allow. Those repairs will also be announced.”

The surface repair process may take up to six weeks. An updated post will be made when the Heart of the City Playground is ready to reopen.

We celebrated the grand opening of Peacock Tea Room, a private event venue designed with a touch of timeless tradition!

Inspired by the tradition of afternoon tea, Peacock Tea Room offers an intimate and elegant setting for bridal luncheons, birthday celebrations, bible studies, and private gatherings of all kinds. Think dressing up, slowing down, and spending a beautiful afternoon with great company. Guests are welcome to bring their own catering and can enjoy outdoor seating on the Veranda or pool patio when the weather allows. For the past eight years, it has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the City of Cookeville, first as Vice Mayor and, for the last four years, as Mayor.

Together, we’ve celebrated milestones, welcomed new opportunities, invested in our community and watched Cookeville continue to grow. But what I will remember most are the people who make this city such a special place to call home.

To our City Councils, City employees, community partners and, most importantly, the citizens of Cookeville: thank you for your trust, your support and the opportunity to serve.

As this chapter comes to a close, my hope for Cookeville is simple: that we continue to choose grace, respect and kindness, even when we disagree.

I will always be proud to call Cookeville home and proud of what we accomplished together.

🚧 CLOSURE NOTICE – OLD WALTON RD. 🚧

The City of Cookeville Public Works Department will completely close a section of Old Walton Road on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, to repair a sinkhole caused by recent storms.

📍 Closure Location: Old Walton Rd. between Windwoods Dr. and Stonebridge Cir.

🚌 School buses will be permitted through the area until 7:30 a.m. After that time, the street will be completely closed to all traffic.

Motorists are encouraged to use surrounding streets for alternate access and travel. Please refer to the attached map for the affected area.

🚧 South Jefferson Avenue Traffic Update 🚧

The permanent speed limit on South Jefferson Avenue has been established and is now 45 mph.

With all five lanes open and the updated speed limit now in effect, motorists are reminded to continue driving with caution and follow all posted traffic signs.
