It’s past midnight, so I guess it’s my birthday. 🎉

I wouldn’t say I’ve been completely resisting this one, but I have been very pensive and have reflected a lot on what it means to grow older, and hopefully a bit wiser.

No matter how hard some parts of this year have truly been, for whatever reason, I’m still here, and because of that, I want to continue to do my part to make this world a little better.

If you would like to make my day even more special, I’m asking people to donate whatever amount you can give to The Laurita Spina Bifida Project @thelsbproject (fundraiser tagged in this post). We are still the small, 100-
percent volunteer, family-run organization we have always been, and I promise you- every cent will go toward helping children and adults with spina bifida and hydrocephalus who are in dire need— wherever help is most needed. 🫶🏽

If you’ve played even a small role in making my life amazing, THANK YOU. It is not lost on me amidst announcement after announcement of people in the spina bifida community leaving us how truly lucky and Blessed I am that I am still here, shaking things up.

Today, I blow my candles out for all of you. 🎂 🩵

Hello! ¡Hola! 👋🏽

Some of you are new here, so I’d like to take this opportunity to re-introduce myself. 🤝

I’m Laura “Laurita” Tellado, and I am a Latina bilingual writer, editor, public speaker, voiceover artist, digital content creator, and non-profit leader. ✍🏽 📣 📱 🤲🏽

As Founder and President of The Laurita Spina Bifida Project, I oversee the coordination and implementation of humanitarian projects in developing countries, benefiting children and adults with disabilities, in particular those with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. 🦽 🌍

As a digital content professional, I have created, curated, and managed content for local, national, and international companies and clients, in both English and español. 💡

I’ve also had the privilege of speaking at various events, as a keynote speaker or panelist, and I love to share my wealth of experience as an adult with spina bifida, navigating the challenges of an inaccessible world, and as a Puerto Rican who grew up in the U.S. 🎤 🗣️

Being a person with disabilities often presents many challenges in conforming to the mainstream workforce, and often, we are not compensated equally. So, I seek opportunities to work remotely in inclusive spaces where I can put my skills to great use. 👩🏻‍💻

If you are someone who is looking to hire a person with any of these qualities, I hope you’ll reach out to me. Let’s talk! ¡Hablemos! 📞💻

#MiGente, if you’re worried about the future of your community, your state, and our country, you’re not alone! 🫶🏽

This is why, now more than ever, we need to take our anger and frustrations and uncertainty to the POLLS. 🗳️

TODAY is the deadline to register to vote in our midterm elections, and you can do that at Vote.org, which is a non-partisan organization. ✍🏽

There are so many things that keep me up at night— the broken state of our healthcare system, basic human dignity for all people, including the immigrants who live and work in our communities, and people with disabilities who are witnessing in horror the systematic dismantling of our rights as citizens and residents. 😔

You can STILL REGISTER TODAY and make a plan with family members, friends, co-workers, or loved ones to either vote in person or via absentee ballot. 💡

I’ve already ordered my ballots, and I’m proudly voting for David Jolly for Florida governor, and Angie Nixon for U.S. Senate representing Florida. I have faith that these two will bring a LOT of hope to our hurting communities. ❤️‍🩹 ✨

This is OUR future, and it is worth fighting for. Don’t let them take your voice. 🇺🇸

TW: Suicide, depression

Today is the last day of Suicide Prevention Month. 🌧️🌤️

I am one of the very lucky ones. I have struggled with some form of depression and/or anxiety for nearly my entire life, and yet, I’m still here. ❤️‍🩹

I have an amazing support system. Still, that doesn’t mean love can or should be enough. ❤️

The past few days have been particularly difficult and painful for many people, and so I dedicate this post to all survivors of trauma, abuse, and assault. (My traumas are different from these.) 💔

In honor of this moment we’re living in, here are some resources that can hopefully help some people who need support. And remember— you don’t need to be “suicidal” to need or deserve help. 🫶🏽 ✨

* Crisis Text Line: Text either HOME or HOLA to 741741 for FREE support, 24/7 - in English or español
I volunteer for CTL as a bilingual crisis counselor whenever I can! @crisistextline

* 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988, available 24/7 @988lifeline

* The Trevor Project: Provides 24/7 crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ people under age 25; either call 1-866-488-7386 or text START to 678-678 any time @trevorproject

* RAINN: has a national hotline for sexual assault survivors, available 24/7; call (800) 656-HOPE (4673) or text HOPE to 64673 @rainn

* Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers a free national helpline, available 24/7; call 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for people with mental and/or substance use disorders @samhsagov

* The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has a HelpLine available Monday through Friday, 10 AM ET to 10 PM ET; call 1-800-950-NAMI (6264); text NAMI to 62640; or e-mail helpline@nami.org @namicommunicate

None of us is meant to do it alone, and there are plenty of resources and support for those who need it— all year long. 🫂💖

I want to take a moment to thank those of you who have had the compassion, empathy, and spirit of generosity to donate to our @gofundme in order to hire teachers at the Hope Inclusive Development Center in Uganda. 🫶🏽✨

While we have not met our goal, the GoFundMe remains open, and we are planning to send the funds we’ve raised to Ambrose and his team (a verified, vetted NGO - non-profit organization) so they can begin to alleviate some very pressing needs.

Link to the GoFundMe fundraiser is in my bio. 🔗

As many of you know, this is a very grassroots effort launched by a physical/occupational therapist in Mbarara, Uganda, and every cent truly goes directly in support of their urgent needs.

I really cannot do this alone. October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month, and it’s just around the corner. What we are doing here is putting awareness into ACTION to help those with the greatest needs.

Please, let’s generate some more attention around this little-known cause. 🫂

Tag our page @thelsbproject and in my #linkinbio is a video from 2022 from the Hope Center that you can feel free to share/amplify.

I’d appreciate it. Thank you! 💚🇺🇬

When Mami goes out on errands and comes back home with garden goodies! 😻😭🥹 💐 🪴

It’s been a minute since I’ve been on here (except for my IG stories). I’m finding joy in the simple things, the whimsical things, the beautiful things, the natural things. 🌸

What’s ONE thing that has brought you joy lately? ✨

On a beautiful October day in 2016, I got to visit the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.

The thing that struck me the most was not the pain and horror of the attacks— although that will always be there. It was the humanity woven through every object on display, and the kindness and bravery in the people who stepped up to save fellow human beings.

Where has that humanity gone? Who have we become as a society that tolerates hate?

We must find our way back— claw our way back, if we have to, in honor of those who lost their lives and those who survived who are permanently changed.

We must advocate for those living with chronic illness and disability because they ran toward the terror, not away from it. It’s not enough to call them heroes. They deserve to be treated as such.

We must speak up and protect our neighbors, whether Black, white, Asian, Latin, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Christian, etc. We must NOT allow hatred and prejudices to take root in our hearts, because it won’t change anything for the better, and it will only break this world even more. We must defend people’s rights to be who they are, and not perceive differences as threats. We must not paint an entire group of people with a broad brush.

And we must support those who continue to tell their stories. Survivors are still here. Victims’ loved ones are still here.

We are still here, and can do our small part to make this world better. ❤️‍🩹

¡Feliz cumpleaños, Mami! 🎉💝

Te adoro, Mami. ¡Te celebramos hoy y siempre! 🎂💖

Happy birthday, Mami! 🩷 🙌🏽 🥳

What a joy and Blessing it is to accompany you as you take another turn around the sun! ☀️

To say you are generous and compassionate is an understatement. You are one of the most brilliant, strongest, and funniest people that exist, and your resolve to never be forgotten alose your playful side and your fascination with nature and the simple things are attributes that I admire so much in you. 💐

You always lift us up when we fall, and you’re the one who taught me to dream big ever since I was little. 🌟

I adore you. We celebrate you today and always! 💞 ✨

(Continuado abajo en los comentarios.) 👇🏽 📌
