‘Africa’s publishing industry is rising,  and the CANEX Book Factory Prize is showcasing its strength.

Now in its second year, the prize drew over 80 submissions from across the continent, reflecting the diversity and vitality of African storytelling. Publishers submitted trade books spanning fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, with an emphasis on works printed on the continent and written in indigenous languages.

The jury - Dr. Boukenna Abdelaziz, Professor of History at Algiers University; Lavaille Lavette, President of JVL Media; and Prof. Egara Kabaji, Professor of Literary Communication at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology - praised the outstanding quality of writing, editing, and production.

Dr. Abdelaziz congratulated “all the authors for their contributions to African literature,” while Lavette emphasised that “a number of books really deserved the prize. It was a hard decision to name the winner.”

🏆 The $20,000 prize was awarded to Karavan Press for In Silence My Heart Speaks, presented by Minister of Culture and Arts Azzedine Mihoubi. Four finalists also received $2,000 each in recognition of their contributions.

Through initiatives like this, CANEX continues to strengthen Africa’s creative economy by elevating publishers and amplifying African narratives to global audiences.

👉 Which African publisher or author do you think deserves wider recognition?
