Cycle for Survival 2024 did not disappoint. This was my and @lavecle’s 8th year participating. It’s always one of our favorite days and was even more highly anticipated this year since our outdoor event was cancelled in 2023.

Every year we are reminded of how important this work is and of the huge impact it makes in the fight against rare cancers. We heard from inspiring speakers, such as Dr Kung (the head of pediatrics at MSK) who spoke about the groundbreaking advances they have made because of these funds. Our team started after our Dad’s brain cancer diagnosis but has evolved to support my friend Emily’s son James who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2020. All pediatric cancer is considered rare and is vastly underfunded. @cycleforsurvival comes in to bridge the gap and provide patients with options where there weren’t any before - hope and a plan.

Our NYC team raised $12,810 contributing to the Team Superhero James national team total of $123,688 which ALSO contributes to the Band of Parents national team total of $270,801!!!!! The BOP team ranked #9 overall and will solely benefit neuroblastoma research, specifically funding a vaccine trial that our James and his superhero buddies take part in.

This is a very delayed - & v long - @cycleforsurvival post 🫣 My Dad died 5 years ago on the 12th. A lot has changed in the last 5 yrs & it excites and frightens me to think of what will change in the next 5. All I can do is hope that a lot changes for the better. One way we can help ensure that future is through @cycleforsurvival. It was a huge honor to lead #TeamSuperHeroJames to the fight in 5 cities this year (my & @lavecle‘s 6th 👊👊), raising a goal-shattering $152K going directly towards neuroblastoma. THANK YOU!! No words can express the gratitude & hope your donations provide.

@cycleforsurvival is the movement to beat rare cancers. “Rare" refers to abt half of ppl- & ALL children- fighting cancer. When my Dad was diagnosed w/ glioblastoma, we hoped for miracles, good quality of life & other best outcomes, but knew a cure was a longshot. My grandfather died of GBM in 1981 & not much has changed w/ the treatment since. But this is a v different story from another “blastoma" I’ve recently become familiar w/: neuroblastoma.

My friends' Emily & Blake's 6 yr old, James, was diagnosed w/ stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma less than 2yrs ago. I’m SO happy to report that James has had no evidence of disease since October. This progress has been possible due to advances in treatment quality & options made in just the last few yrs, incl. immunotherapy & a clinical trial @memorialsloankettering for a vaccine to prevent relapse. Not long ago, the survival rate for high-risk neuroblastoma was 5% - similar to GBM - & it is now 50%. This shows how we CAN help arm doctors & researchers with the tools they need to increase the survival rate & reduce the toxicity of existing treatments.

I’m so proud of @egoebz for sharing her & @superherojamesg’s story, speaking at the DC event & for fighting everyday for a better future. 🌶🖕 Kids can’t fight cancer alone. I know my Dad, a lover of children & school teacher of 40 years, would want our efforts here. TOGETHER, we are making a difference to beat this "blastoma" & bring hope and progress to the future of rare cancers. Thank you, again, for your generosity & support. As @Marqjohnson said during the ride this weekend, @CycleforSurvival is the best kool-aid I’ve ever tasted 🧃💯 It was a different [virtual] experience this year, but I am no less inspired and amazed by the #cycleforsurvival community - and I am so happy to share the message of hope, resilience and progress (!!) in the fight against rare cancers.

Every year the event hits differently. This year, we started a second team in honor of my college friend @egoebz‘s 4yr old son James. @superherojamesg was diagnosed with stage 4 “high-risk” Neuroblastoma last December. All pediatric cancers are considered “rare” and are severely underfunded. James is currently kicking Cancer’s butt at MSK Kids and will benefit from the $66,827 (& counting!) raised by #TeamSuperheroJames that is going directly towards neuroblastoma research & treatment at MSK. It’s particularly important to develop less toxic and less invasive treatments, with fewer side effects, when treating pediatric patients! 🦾

It’s safe to say I’m no fan of a “blastoma” and am also so proud of my OG #TeamShakeIt for raising $6,085 going towards ALL rare cancer research. @lavecle and I started this team in 2017 after our Dad was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a “rare” brain cancer. “Rare” because rare cancer isn’t. Roughly half of people with cancer have a rare kind.

Today would have been my Dad’s 70th birthday and I really I miss him. And I miss us 4 (5, 6, & 7). I was going to post a favorite memory from his super secret and *exclusive* 60th but then spiraled... so here’s an assortment of silliness including snaps of some of our favorite pranks - frosted cake pans, presents for ourselves, mashed potato sundaes and more (sadly can’t find photos for all of those but definitely recommend pranking someone with them someday 😜, especially the 🥔🍨).
