This week marks one year since I launched my small business, Lavender & Light 🪻☀️

This business has been such a gift from God in so many ways. Namely, it has allowed me to homeschool my special-needs son, and it has also created opportunities to bring scripture into the homes of people around the world.

Here’s a bit of my story 🫶🏽

I never expected to be a homeschool mom. Our daughter attends a traditional school and frankly, I never felt capable enough to take on a role as important as educating either of our kids.

The plan was always for me to go back to fulltime work once the kids reached school age. However, over the course of 3 years, my son attended 6 different schools and every environment left him extremely overwhelmed.

So, we needed a different path.

I needed a way to meet his unique educational needs while also helping provide for our family. Being able to work on commissions from home for a few hours each week while he is at therapy has been exactly what our family needed.

And let me tell you guys, over this past year there hasn’t been a single week when I haven’t had a commission to work on. Time and time again, the Lord has reminded me that He knows what His children need and faithfully provides in ways we could never have planned ourselves.

And even more importantly, I couldn’t have predicted the full scope of this calling when God first placed it on my heart. After a season of “failing” as international missionaries and walking away discouraged, the Lord has graciously been using this little business to bring His truth to those living on the opposite side of the globe. 🌏

Looking back, I don’t just see a business.

I see the Lord’s provision for our family, His love for the nations AND an incredible community of customers who have chosen to support small business owners instead of solely corporate giants 🙏

So, if you are a small business supporter, thank you a million times over. You are helping to change lives for the better. 🤍

Hi! 👋 I’m Dorothy. I have a background in portrait drawing and over 15 years of experience capturing faces with pencil and charcoal.

Lately, my heart has been pulled in a new direction- toward soft watercolor florals, meaningful Scripture pieces, and custom home sketches that tell a story. 🎨

My family and I recently moved back to the U.S. after working in Paris, France for 2 years, and the architecture and the flowers I fell in love with there deeply influenced the new way I create art. 🇫🇷

My faith in the Christ is of supreme importance to me, and I want the world to share the same hope that I have. That’s why I include verses from the Bible under most of my work. I want others to have reminders of the goodness of God in the midst of a world that distracts us from the peace and hope He offers.

This space is where I’ll be sharing my new custom pieces: gentle, personal pieces that reflect faith, beauty, and the places we love most.

Sometimes His love looks like comfort and provision. Other times, it looks like conviction, pruning, surrender, and circumstances that expose the places where we still need to grow.

We may ask God to make our lives easier, while He is lovingly making us more like Jesus.

That doesn’t mean every painful circumstance is directly sent by God, or that our suffering doesn’t matter to Him. It means He is able to use even the things we would never choose to shape our character and draw us closer to Christ.

Our culture has taught us to build a life that makes people admire us. Wealth, beauty, accomplishments - the “Instaworthy” life. But I’m learning that I’d rather have a peaceful heart than an impressive life.

Personally, the hustle and comparison robs me of my mental health. So, please just take me out of the running.

We chase it like it’s water, but it functions like salt. The more external validation we seek and consume, the thirstier we get.

We try to secure a version of ourselves that everyone will approve of, only to realize that human applause is a moving target.

When we rely on people to validate our worth, we inadvertently turn our relationships into transactions.

But human beings were never meant to carry the weight of our identity.

When Christ becomes our greatest source of validation, we become free to stop seeking from people what only He can give and we become empowered to love others out of our abundance rather than our emptiness.

And what does it mean for Christ to be our greatest source of validation? It means our true value comes from being made in His image and deeply loved by Him.

Only He is perfect, only He can save us. And we were created to reflect His glory to the world, not our own.

Let’s choose to live in freedom, my friends.

The second half of this verse in Ecclesiastes says that God put a longing for eternity inside of us. Personally, that explains the inexplicable feeling of homesickness I have often felt in this fleeting life.

So, if you are also feeling restless or waiting on a prayer to be answered today, remember that this world is temporary, but His promises are eternal. Trust in His intentional, purposeful timing today 🤍
