A staple of our BCL/JD program, Integration Week and the subsequent Integration Workshop course ensure all 1L students begin their law studies on strong foundations. The course complements the other first-year courses using transversal and integrative approaches.

For the rest of the week, students attended professor-led plenaries ─ such as “Introduction to the Civil Law and Common Law traditions”, “Introduction to Legal Writing”, and “Introduction à la formation juridique transsystémique” ─ and took part in small group activities. This year’s program included a compelling panel discussion with professors and law alumni on Dealing with Sensitive Material and Fostering Civil Discourse in Law School.

Bonne rentrée à toutes et à tous !

🎙️ In the first episode of the new season of the ‘Mark my words’ podcast, we’re asking: are universities our secret weapon against the climate crisis?

Rees Kassen, PhD’01, the academic director for the McGill Sustainability Park, and Grégoire Baillargeon, BCL/LLB'98, the president of BMO Quebec, discuss the daunting climate-related challenges that face us all, why they require an all-hands-on-deck response, and how the Park will lead the way.

History made in Oxford! ⚖️ We're so proud of the performance of Sydney Gervais, Bryan Lee and Emily Payne as the first-ever team to represent McGill Law at the Oxford International Intellectual Property Law Moot.

The McGill team earned second place in the Best Newcomers Award, given to the highest‑ranked team after the preliminary rounds from an institution that has not participated in the moot before or since 2021.

“Their achievement reflects several important milestones," said their proud coach, Me Fortunat Nadima from ROBIC. "They took the initiative to enter the competition; secured an invitation to the oral rounds by placing among the top 32 of more than 70 teams worldwide based on their written submissions; balanced intensive preparation with significant leadership, research and recruitment commitments; and represented McGill with distinction at the oral proceedings, drawing positive feedback from judges, organizers, law clerks and fellow competitors."

"Many thanks to the moot organizers, peers from other schools, supporters from the Canadian legal community, and in particular to Denise Felsztyna, Camille Aubin, Samuel Ross, Catherine Thall Dubé, Guillaume Lavoie‑Ste‑Marie and Audrey Berteau for serving as guest judges.”

Atagün Mert Kejanlıoğlu, DCL'26, wrote his doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Johanne Poirier. His thesis, for which he was awarded a scholarship by Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et culture (FQRSC), is entitled “Imagining 'the People': Towards a Democratic and Non-Populist Theory of Constituent Power”. In his thesis, he proposes a non-populist and democratic conception of “the people” as the holder of constitution-making power in response to the populist instrumentalization of this concept. During his studies at McGill, he also took on leadership roles, such as President and VP Academic of the Graduate Law Students Association (GLSA).

"Before I came to McGill Law, I ran a communications firm and worked as a documentary filmmaker — focusing my work on social justice and climate action," says Tristan Surman, BCL/JD'26, this year's Elizabeth Torrance Gold Medalist.

"McGill Law provided so many opportunities to tackle these same challenges, not only by facilitating my work at human rights organizations like the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and Citizen Lab, but also by giving me space to explore it from my own perspective. I wrote term papers under the supervision of brilliant professors and co-designed a student-led seminar on the legal, economic, and policy issues at the heart of Canada's green transition. I owe so much of who I've become to the intellectual generosity of the McGill Law community." by @lawmcgill
