Ninth Ward, New Orleans – St. Claude

It was 14 years after Hurricane Katrina, & not only was the area desolate…it felt lifeless. Even standing outside, I could smell the mold and stagnation left behind by the flood. What little trace of life remained didn’t seem to belong; it felt out of place, yet strangely settled, as if it had always been there.

I’m referring to the few people I saw sitting on porches…people who were not from the community…now occupying homes where families had lost everything, even their lives. Seeing my people’s pain turned into someone else’s profit made me sick to my stomach.

Today marks two weeks from what would have been your birthday. It has now been three years and four months since you left us, and I hadn’t wanted to post anything until now.

I still struggle to visit the city where I grew up. Though my childhood there was glorious, special, and full of joy, the weight of your passing overshadows those good memories. There is so much I could say, so much I could try to express—yet no amount of writing could ever capture it. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and if that is true, then a video must be immeasurable.

I’ve always said I carry my mother’s strength and my father’s power, and I thank our Heavenly Father for the creation of you both. Daddy, you have no idea what our world has become without you—or perhaps you did have an inkling, which is why you fought so hard.

I have never been at a loss for words, but this time I am. So I will simply end by saying: I love you. I will always honor your name, and hold your legacy in the utmost regard.

With everlasting love,
from your “third daughter” and your “first son”—as you told me more than once, certain that with how I carried myself, I should have been a boy!

Life has been, and continues to be, increasingly stressful these days. I know you see it, and more often, feel it!!

It seems as though so many of us are moving defensively…even worse divisively…carrying visible anger and rage. Often this only covers deeper hurt or some form of injustice known only to them. Seldom are these emotions truly processed; instead, they are regurgitated and put on display.

We live in a time where poor behavior is not only common but often praised and rewarded, where bad conduct gains popularity. In the midst of all this, I encourage you to put your trust in Him, because sometimes simply witnessing isn’t enough…sometimes a stance must be taken.

And when that moment comes, I pray we are found together on the right side.

I know I can’t calm the storm, so I’ve stopped trying. What I can do is focus on calming myself, praying that the storm will end sooner rather than later. Even though I know it will eventually pass, that doesn’t always stop me from losing my footing, my bearings, or even falling. The storm will pass, but until then, I need to seek God, stay connected to Him, and fix my eyes on His guidance. When I finally come out of the storm, I know I won’t be the same person who walked into it.
