A clean result in product design testing is easy to take at face value. Usability tests only see the window we give them, they answer the question we asked. But that answer shouldn't always be treated as the verdict on the whole experience.

Took me a while to figure this out. The 'best time of day' advice was never the full picture. Once I started noticing patterns, energy stopped feeling random. Turns out the answer was self-discovery: realising why I'm at my best in certain settings, which habits and projects consistently energise me, has helped me more than any clock.

You can polish something that's fundamentally wrong, and it will look finished while still failing. On the other hand, something can look messy or unfinished and already be functionally correct. Appearance doesn’t tell you whether something is really working.

From where I sit the claim goes: craft matters less, since judgement is what's scarce in today’s AI era. Fair but incomplete. Judgement is built by going through the work, not around it. Skip craft, and you're skipping the most reliable way to earn it.

The distance isn't what determines a pivot's survival. Customers only see what they're getting and why. That's what has to hold.

Seth Godin on the relationship between ends and means, and how "many times, the means are the ends". The journey itself is where real value is formed.

Now that the cost of creating something is gone, Rams’ argument is particularly relevant. The interesting part is that he included himself in the critique. He looked at the mess and asked whether his own work was adding to it.

In his TEDx talk "Design for people, not awards", Timothy Prestero highlights the importance of designing outcomes (not products), and shares the challenges of designing medical devices for newborns in developing countries.
Another line that stayed with me was: "are we designing for the world we want, or for the world we have?"

I first came across "quiet flight" on an in-car UI project back in 2016. It's Lincoln's guiding principle to deliver a serene driving experience. "Quiet luxury" went mainstream around 2023 (a revived fashion movement favouring timeless design over flashy branding). The phrase "quiet confidence" keeps surfacing in the self-development world. Its popularity rose in recent decades, but the idea of quiet strength over loud boasting is much older.
