What’s meant to be will always find its way—even if it takes a little time.Comedian Jordan Rock, known for Love Life Season 2 and as the younger brother of Chris Rock, and Layla Mustafa, Senior Director of Global Brand Partnerships at RCA Records, are living proof. Their story began online, but life’s timing had other plans. Two years passed before they finally went on their first date. In between, there were serendipitous run-ins—coast to coast, from Los Angeles to New York—as they realized they shared mutual friends and an undeniable spark that just hadn’t fully caught flame yet. Then, one sunny afternoon in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Jordan spotted Layla at The Lay Out and knew it was time. “We finally set a date for Taco Tuesday and haven’t gone a day without speaking since,” Layla says. What drew her in most wasn’t just his humor but his heart. “Jordan would do all these small, sweet gestures with no expectations. I instantly felt like this was someone with a genuinely good soul.”In June 2024, he proposed on her 30th birthday in Joshua Tree. By August 2025, they sealed their love in Virginia, uniting Sudanese and African American traditions in a celebration of laughter, culture, and divine timing.Swipe to see how Jordan and Layla’s special day came together, and to learn more about their love in this week’s Bridal Bliss at ESSENCE.com.Congratulations @jordanrock X @laylamufasa by @laylamufasa

my friend @shavonec hit me up with a really cool idea and asked if i wanted to be a part of it. it was an immediate yes because, in that moment, i realized “being outside” is, in fact, a transferable skill!!!to think all those vt house parties where i watched denim slowly tint the walls blue over the course of a semester, that hot summer walk for a well deserved slice of &pizza to wrap an early morning on u street, and those 12 block treks to kinfolk (r.i.p.) and café erzulie in 20 degree weather have been preparing me for this moment. turns out the impromptu tuesday nights at apt200 weren’t a cry for help after all, they were an unpaid internship.i’m officially at the age where i have no idea who’s throwing the parties anymore, and honestly i can’t wait for the new generation to put me on ☺️if you’re building community through nightlife, music, or culture, the club nothing community fund is for you!! go apply @community.nothing @nothing 🤍 by @laylamufasa

A meeting. A miss. Another meeting. Not once. Not twice. Three times.A Tinder exchange. A random run-in. An afternoon at The Lay Out. And that’s when it landed. Not strategy. Not the three-day rule. Not who texts first. Emotional readiness. A space that felt safe. Community as comfort. No games. Just presence.“Too many people have relationships with their thoughts.”Maybe that’s the shift. Instead of overthinking, there was openness. A spin of the block. A yes to tacos. A yes to tomorrow. From almost to intention. From intention to home.Black love isn’t performance. It’s choosing each other out loud, again and again.Anything can happen. But this was chosen. The Lay Out’s Tales of Black Love continue… by @laylamufasa

Our jirtig ✨A sacred Sudanese tradition led by our matriarchs. Wrapped in red for joy, dripped in gold for prosperity, incense rising to cleanse the air, each ritual a symbol of Sudan’s culture and history. Milk shared (and spit) for protection and purity, the most beautiful way to bless our union and honor those who came before us. 📸 @najwitthecam by @laylamufasa

A few weeks ago I got to really step into my role as the young lit Sudanese auntie I’ve always wanted to beeeeee! We threw an Eid party complete with lace doilies and hard candy, doing our part to preserve the culture (and the recipes nobody wrote down) 🥰 by @laylamufasa
