My entry for the 2024 Sulman Art Prize! Very vulnerable feeling putting art in a comp.. 🤢

The iconic Campbell Soup Can’s were a symbol of mass production and consumerism in the 1960’s. This derivative extends that conversation with a layer of commentary relevant to the 21st century.

An AI generated Soup Can serves as a backdrop to explore mass-produced image culture, and the broader implications of AI on expression, authenticity and creativity.

Flaws in the reproduction convey a message about the imperfections of an automated world, challenging the notion that technological advancement is always in our best interests.

Iconography, represented by the Image ID and watermarks, become a visual battleground, touching on the themes of ownership, the commodification of digital images, and AI’s role in blurring the lines between originality and reproduction.

No industry is safe from the assimilation of AI

Six week art residency in Kanazawa 🇯🇵, easily one of the best things I’ve ever done. Made some traditional pottery pieces with @greenarts_jp, designed, carved & printed my first Ukiyo-e woodblock print, and gained an unhealthy obsession with sumo 💙 taken in 金沢kanazawa, Japan by @laymills

Cherry blossoms 🌸📸 - I just came back from an art residency in Japan and was lucky enough to spend 6 weeks in Kanazawa, right through Sakura season. Kanazawa is beyond beautiful. Every few days I’d mark a pin location where I thought the blossoms (and plum trees) would pop, and then right around peak bloom, I went out and got a bunch of snaps. The photos don’t do it justice.. I cannot wait to back and explore more of Japan during Sakura season 🇯🇵 taken in 金沢kanazawa, Japan by @laymills

My first big figurative painting (finished).. I tried to move out of my comfort zone, but got too scared.

I added the fence because it’s how I felt trying to experiment - but got too stuck in my head (the ego won again). I liked the more expressive face in the video (the first blue version) will take that into the next! by @laymills

Unforgettable experience. I was in Bali for a bday and decided to spend a week in the hills so I could do some drawing.

I stayed at an awesome little bed and breakfast and every morning I’d wake up looking at Mt Agung, Bali’s highest and most sacred active volcano.

I found some fake Salomons (not advised) and got a guide to go up with me on a sunrise trek. A car picked me up at 9pm, we got to the base of Agung at 11pm and spent the night hiking up 3000+ metres. 30 mins in I wanted to quit. Zero sleep, and immense pain, but I don’t think I’ll ever see a better sunrise. 🌄

Look out for the French K-pop cameo 👀 #upupup taken in Mount Agung, Bali by @laymills

Utah dreaming.. 💭🏜️

This painting kicked my ego’s butt… Made from memory after my Utah road trip, I had a pretty good composition at the halfway point (first frame). My ego wanted to keep it safe, but I wanted that feeling of the winding roads, endless canyon, swirling sky and unforgiving heat that I had romanticised in my head 💙

So I experimented a little. And then a little more.. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!!

Some ancient rock art sites I found in Moab, Utah - age range of 2k to 8k years old. Birthing rock (slide 5) tells the story of a birth and the evolution of the baby to a god, it wraps around that whole rock 🪨 🤯

For scale, the last 2 slides are sculptures from similar era’s in Rome and Egypt that I saw in a gallery in Dallas. Nerding out is my love language 🤓 taken in Moab, Utah by @laymills
