🌎 I help professionals use AI to build and improve your life/career
🚀 My story: laid off to successful entrepreneur

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Never ask Claude to update your resume.

Hi, I’m Justin. I help mid-career professionals use AI to build something no layoff can touch.

 Ask these 5 questions instead:

1. “Based on this experience, what problems am I uniquely qualified to solve?”

2. “What industries outside my current one would value these specific skills?”

3. “What does my career trajectory say about the type of leader I am?”

4. “Where is the gap between how I describe myself and how the market sees me?”

5. “What would I need to add or shift to be seen as a consultant, not a candidate?”

That last one changed everything for me.

Because I stopped trying to get hired.
And started building something I couldn’t be laid off from.

I almost didn’t say this out loud.
I’m 47.
Laid off because of AI.

And when I really sat with what that meant

it didn’t just scare me.
It wrecked my identity.

If you’ve ever built a career that felt safe — until it wasn’t — follow @layup.digital.

From the outside, everything can look solid.
I spent 15 years building a career that looked like security from the outside.

You show up. You perform. You get promoted.
You build a career that looks like security.
And then one day the company you gave everything to tells you the machine does it cheaper.

That’s not just a job loss.
That’s a belief system collapsing.

For a long time, I thought loyalty to a company was a form of protection.
It’s not.

AI doesn’t care about your tenure.
The title doesn’t protect you.

And the thing that wrecked me most wasn’t the layoff —
it was realizing I had been building on someone else’s foundation the whole time.

That’s the moment I stopped asking “who will hire me next”
and started asking “what am I actually building for myself.”
That shift changed everything.

Two years later — no 9-5, no commute, no PTO requests.

My acupuncture appointment is this Friday.
My trainer is on Thursday.
No one owns my calendar.

Not because I got lucky.
Because I stopped waiting for a system that was never designed to protect me.

If you’re a mid-career professional watching AI disrupt the industry you gave 15 years to and you want to know how to use it for yourself instead — follow @layup.digital. That’s exactly what I help people figure out.

I’m 47. And I’m a bit embarrassed to admit:

Hi, I’m Justin. I help mid-career professionals use AI to build something no layoff can touch.

Here’s what nobody tells you:

	1.	I spent 15 years becoming the most valuable person in the room and none of it protected me when Dropbox went AI-first.

	2.	I thought the title meant I had made it. I didn’t realize it was a ceiling with a trapdoor.

	3.	I stayed loyal to a system that had already planned my replacement before I found out.

	4.	The résumé I was proud of became a document no one was asking for.

	5.	I kept waiting for the right moment to build something of my own. I waited until the moment was made for me.

	6.	Three years later, no nine to five, no commute, no PTO request. The system I built runs because I built it to.

	7.	Starting over at 44 wasn’t the failure. Thinking the corporation was the plan. That was the mistake.

📌 Save this before your next performance review.

There are a few tells that give away a mid-career professional who’s quietly afraid of the next layoff. Most of us never notice them in ourselves.

I’m Justin. I was laid off at 44 by an AI-first company, so I know these from the inside. Now I help mid-career professionals build AI systems before a layoff sets the timeline for them.

The tells:

1. Over-preparing for the meeting nobody else prepared for.
2. Hoarding the tasks only you know how to do.
3. No longer putting an opinion in writing.
4. Saying yes to every “quick favor” so you look indispensable.
5. Saving every AI tutorial and building none of them.

None of that is weakness.

It’s a smart, experienced person trying to make themselves un-cuttable inside someone else’s org chart.

The move that actually works is putting that same expertise into something you own.

Want to turn a career’s worth of expertise into something that runs without you?

Hi, I’m Justin. For years I thought a résumé was a summary of what I’d done. It’s really a bid for a seat somebody else controls. Here are the lines my recruiter friend bans from every résumé that hits her pile:

1. “Seasoned professional with 20+ years of experience.” It dates you before it credits you.
2. “Responsible for managing a team of 12.” Responsible for is permission language. It describes a seat.
3. “Proven track record of driving results.” Every résumé in the stack says it. None of them prove it.
4. “Detail-oriented team player with strong communication skills.” Adjectives a machine can’t verify and a human stopped reading years ago.
5. “Familiar with AI tools.” Familiar is the weakest word in the language. You built something or you didn’t.

Here’s the shift underneath every one of those.

You updated the résumé this week and stalled halfway through the summary.

You’ve sent out application after application this month and gotten back silence.

You saw “AI-first company” in a job description and felt your stomach drop before you finished reading it.

So you go back and rewrite the document again. That’s the wrong page to keep rewriting.

Every banned line up there describes a seat you were handed, and seats get deleted what you built while sitting in one doesn’t.

Ask AI to turn that into something you own instead, and you stop competing for a spot in the pile.

Doctors, engineers, coaches, recruiters. Every one of them stopped trying to learn AI and started using Claude on the expertise they already built, turning it into a system they own, not a seat someone can delete.

If you’re a mid-career pro with a graveyard of half-watched tutorials, comment BUILD and I’ll send you the free tool that turns any one of them into a system you actually use ,and you don’t even have to know how to use Claude Code.

Being replaced by AI is just one board meeting away

Hi, I’m Justin. Three years free from the 9 to 5. I test what’s working so you don’t have to start from scratch.

Oracle’s September 11 filing named AI as a restructuring driver for the first time.

The following Monday, layoff emails went out early in the morning. Last day: that day.

ServiceNow’s cuts took effect this Monday. Its own explanation: “Our platform is generating real AI efficiencies inside our own business.”

Neither one called it a crisis.

They called it efficiency.

This isn’t slowing down.

You read a headline like that this week and quietly did the math on your own team.

Then you refreshed LinkedIn, saved one more AI video for the weekend, and told yourself you’d start once things calm down.

They won’t.

And that room was never yours to control.

You gave a company a career’s worth of attention and never once apologized for it.

Give the idea in your notes app the same attention, and let AI turn what you already know into steps you can start tonight.

If you’ve built a real career and you’re done letting a board meeting decide what happens next, comment BUILD and I’ll send you the free tool that turns one saved tutorial into a system you own and you don’t even have to know how to use Claude Code.

Mid-career 40-somethings with an idea

Hi, I’m Justin. Three years free from the 9 to 5. I test what’s working so you don’t have to start from scratch.

AI is still the leading reason US employers have given for job cuts this year. 120,136 of them, per Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Tech alone has announced 165,925 cuts in 2026, up 54% from this time last year.

This isn’t slowing down.

Last weekend you sat through another tutorial and still couldn’t say what you’d build first.

The good prompts you saved are scattered across three apps and a chat you can’t find.
That pile isn’t a character flaw.

It’s a format problem. Nobody finishes a 2-hour tutorial at 9pm after a full day.

So stop asking how to finish.

Ask which step your career already covers, build the one after it, and do that for 30 days.

If you’re a mid-career pro with an idea in your notes app and a graveyard of half-watched tutorials, comment BUILD and I’ll send you the free tool that turns any one of them into a system you actually use and you don’t even have to know how to use Claude Code.

How to build for yourself in your 40s after a career of building for a company without feeling guilty
(FROM A 48 YEAR OLD FREE FROM A 9-5)

Hi, I’m Justin. I help mid-career professionals build the thing they’ve been saving instead of watching.

Here’s what nobody tells you:

1. Name the guilt out loud. It’s a habit you were trained into, not a verdict.
2. Put your idea on the calendar the way you’d book a client meeting.
3. Start from what your career already taught you, not a new skill.
4. Hand the translation to AI. Ask it to turn what you know into steps.
5. Do one step, then close the laptop and go live your weekend.

You’re reading this with your own idea one tab over, already listing what you should be doing instead.

Sunday night you opened it at last, then answered two work Slacks “just to get ahead.”

That’s the trap. The guilt feels like responsibility.

It’s a company’s habit, living in your calendar. Your career already did the hard part, and AI turns it into steps that are yours.

Create leverage BEFORE the layoff

Hi, I’m Justin. I help mid-career professionals build the thing they’ve been saving instead of watching.

Here’s what nobody tells you:

1. Write down the calls only you know how to make. That’s the raw material.
2. Take the process you repeat every week and turn it into steps AI can run.
3. Pick one tutorial you saved and build from it. Skip finishing it.
4. Put the result somewhere you own, not on a company drive.
5. Test one idea from your notes app this weekend instead of wondering about it for a year.

You matched every line on that list to something you already know how to do.

Then you remembered the doc you opened for your own idea, two bullets in, and closed.

Leverage isn’t a new credential. It’s what your career already taught you, put somewhere you own it, and AI is how it gets there.

📌 Save this before your next performance review. đŸ‘„ Tag the person who still thinks their title is safe.

You gave a company a career’s worth of attention and never once apologized for it.

You’re allowed to give yourself the same.

This week you signed up for another AI course and left it unopened. You promised yourself tomorrow. Again.

Being behind was never the embarrassing part.

It’s how long the answer has sat in a folder of tutorials you saved.

One of them, plus what your career already taught you, is enough for AI to turn into a first build.

I know because I lived the other version. 15 years in recruiting. Dropbox replaced me with AI at 44. No retirement. A severance check with an expiration date.

Three years later, I still haven’t gone back to a 9 to 5. AI lets me run and test businesses that sustain my living.

And I get to do the things I love. I play music again.

Without the guilt.

Want to turn the trainings you never finished into something that’s actually running?

You gave a company a career’s worth of attention and never once apologized for it.

You’re allowed to give yourself the same.

This week you checked the job boards more times than you’d admit.

You told your spouse you’re still figuring it out.

The good prompt you wrote last month is lost somewhere between three docs and a bookmarked chat.

That’s the part nobody says out loud.

You’ve been the reliable one for a whole career, and finishing what you started is the habit that kept your own ideas offline.

The expertise is already paid for.

AI can turn it into something that runs without you watching it.
