The week of August 10–14, we hosted the first pilot iteration of the New Suns Independent Graduate School Artist Residency in Vermont.

We gathered at our @newsunscommunitycenter in East Thetford, Vermont, a space with an auditorium + stage, ceramics studio, two kitchens, a Liberation Lending Library + reading room (aka makeshift sewing studio), and THREE PIANOS.

We were incredibly lucky to have our own Taylor Barnes @fulljoyfarm with us to teach the cohort three days of intensive improvisational movement + dance - experiments in writing, performance, sound, and embodied practice.

Our small pilot cohort brought together multidisciplinary artists working across textiles, music composition, dance, puppeteering, printmaking, and multi-instrumentation. Throughout the week, we also took field trips into the local community. Importantly: the residency was family-friendly.

Kids ages 4, 10, 12, and 13 joined us throughout the week—making, playing, learning, and experimenting alongside the adults.

We’re selling our building!!!
It was originally built as a hotel with a carriage barn in 1850 and was owned by the @vtlawschool from 1970’s into early 2000’s. It was a cafeteria and office space as well as a meeting hall, ground floor restaurant and basement pub. Located on the town green in South Royalton, kitty corner to the @worthyburgersoro and a two minute walk to a post office, @southroyaltonmarket , library, tattoo shop, elementary and high school, community garden, fire department, seasonal ice-skating, @balevt and more. Plus it’s a short 13 minute drive to @babesvt !!!

In the early 2000’s the offices, meeting spaces and restaurant were transformed into 9 apartments.

We purchased it in 2019 and have added 4 apartments on the 3rd floor and there’s still room for more apartments or a movement space to be built out on the 4th floor of the main building (which used to be a ballroom) & the 2nd floor of the carriage barn (which has amazing exposed timber framework). The pub is vacant but still has all of its infrastructure and the commercial kitchen remains intact and was recently renovated by @moonandstarsvt for arepa and empanada production!

Since 2021 we have insulated the building, installed fire sprinklers, replaced the heating system and updated the electricity.

Most of the existing apartments are studios or one bedrooms. There are 3 suites which are a private room and bathroom with a shared kitchen (kind of like hotel rooms). They were built out with intention to serve law students but they provide a great option for low income folks who don’t need much space. Some of the small apartments could definitely be combined to make larger apartments. Or the suites could be made into efficiencies by adding a small kitchenettes and turning the existing shared kitchen into another apartment.
There is one larger two bedroom apartment in the carriage barn which also has a large yard with mature fruit trees (pear, peach, black walnut, plum).

Team up with some friends and start a residency!!! Or a school or a @mcmenamins !! Sky is the limit as far as the possibilities are concerned✨

At the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum we took a close look at the tools and materials behind sensational Japanese woodworking. 🪵🪾🪜🪑Exhibits are organized across multiple sections covering the evolution of tools, the role of master carpenters (daiku) and other stuff. 🌿🌱🌱🌱🍃

In a rural weaving community on the Hatatani River today we met a visionary designer at her waste free textile factory and toured her facilities including her farm. Every piece is unique, they don’t advertise. The dye is both natural and fiber reactive. They use wool from their animals. 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱Here are the principles of Tamaki Niime. 1. Live comfortably, live cheerfully 2. Do it now! Think while you do it 3. Growth comes through failure, so keep experimenting 4. Question the norm, create comfortable things 5. Make the things, experiences, and people in your life feel good 6. The earth, animals, and plants are all living things, let’s live together 7. A new sun is rising 🌞
We’re excited to share that our new innovation lab, New Suns, has launched a radical, free, collaborative arts graduate school — an experimental space where art, ecology, collective practice, and curiosity meet.
