Gather differently, without the need to consume. But creating together around a table in a barn surrounded by nature. Lately, our hands mostly scroll. For more than two million years they did something else: they shaped, pressed, built and mended. It is one of the oldest ways we have of working out what to do next, and of being useful to each other. So for two days we sit at one long table with makers, artists and neighbours, put the screens away and give our hands the job again. You can change how you think about a problem, and how you meet the person next to you. And you leave feeling a little better, with something you made. 30–31 October, in a two-hundred-year-old barn in Sarreyer, near Verbier. A walk with a local artist, printing by hand, shared meals, no experience needed. Ten to twelve places. Early bird until 17th October. Comment CREATE and we’ll send you everything. « The more your create, the better you feel 🤍 » La Chaise × Le Baron Perché @lachaise.community · @le.baron.perche by @le.baron.perche
We are so excited to share this with you. On Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October, La Chaise and Le Baron Perché are opening the doors of a barn in Sarreyer, high in the Swiss Alps, for our first long-format creative weekend in nature. We have wanted to do this for a long time. Our workshops have always been about making something with your hands, but a few hours is rarely enough to slow down. This time we have given it two full days: time to walk, to cook, to talk, to make, and to see what comes up when nobody is in a rush. We begin outside, walking the land around the barn with a local artist and gathering what we find. Then, around one big table, we turn it into a collagraph print by hand. We share lunch cooked together with local products, watch the sun go down from the barn, and on Saturday we close with a creative circle. No experience needed. Only curiosity, and the wish to sit down and make something together. We are keeping the group small, so everyone has a place at the table. Come for Day 1, or stay for both days. Want to join us? Comment CREATE below and we will send you the full details and the early bird link straight to your messages. You can also write to us at contact@lachaise.community. We can’t wait to meet you there. Long tables stretched into the evening, with the Swiss Alps as our backdrop. The idea behind Les Tables Perchées is about sitting side by side, getting to know each other, exchanging stories, enjoying the harvest, and watching night fall over the majestic peaks. Thank you to everyone who gathered in our garden in Sarreyer last Saturday to share wine and food from local growers and producers. Images: @sakke_kbh by @le.baron.perche
And our tables are set, and Paula is taking a quiet moment with the view before tomorrow. Tomorrow we open the doors of @le.baron.perche in Sarreyer for a day of walking, creating and sharing a table together. We start with a walk, then print with collagraph and cook lunch together, and we finish with a community pizza night. Two SPOTS are still open at the local price. You are welcome for Friday OR both days, fifteen minutes from Verbier. Book your place through the link in our bio, or comment “CREATE” if any questions send us a message. 🫶🏼 @le.baron.perche @lachaise.community by @le.baron.perche
Comment « CREATE » and we’ll send you the full programme and booking link. Two Days of Making in Sarreyer La Chaise × Le Baron Perché Friday 30 – Saturday 31 October « When we enter a place, the place enters us too. » @le.baron.perche is Vanessa’s home, and its barn is the muse of this weekend. We’ll begin outside, walking the land with a local artist and gathering leaves, grasses and fallen textures. Then we’ll bring them to the table and turn them into collagraph plates. Collagraph is a printmaking technique where every vein, fibre and thread you lay down shows up on paper. It is a way of looking at what is already there and finding the beauty in it. No experience is needed, only curiosity. A chair is the simplest object in a room, and the first reason to sit down together. That is where La Chaise began. Communities often need a reason to gather, one that doesn’t involve buying something. We want to offer that reason. Make more and consume less. Learn through exchange with the person beside you. This time we wanted to go further than an afternoon and give the process room to breathe over two days, because we believe the more we create together, the better we feel. - Day 1, Friday Arrival at 10:00, introduction to the technique collagraph and the why of this weekend, followed by a walk together with local Artist @ludovicchappex and foraging, lunch cooked together. Initiation on the workshop, sunset drinks at the barn and a community dinner night. - Day 2, Saturday Breakfast, continue inking, printing and creating, brunch, and a closing creative circle at 15:30. 🍂Food, materials and guidance are included. Accommodation and transport not included but we can assist with that. The group is small, and the workshop is guided in English, French, Spanish and Italian. The weekend is hosted by @vanessa_rothschild of @le.baron.perche , with @luciaharrison (creative director and photographer) and @paulapetite.art (visual artist and graphic designer), co-founders of @lachaise.community. What you make is yours, and so is the decision of what it becomes. #sarreyer #valdebagnes #workshop #switzerland #creativeretreat by @le.baron.perche
Our October to feel Trees don’t carry into winter what they no longer need, and this in-between month is a good time to ask what we’re carrying ourselves. The town goes quiet, the light comes in low, and there’s finally room to make something slowly, next to people you didn’t know before for some strange reason… We’ve built the month around two printmaking techniques that work with what autumn drops. - Saturday 24 October, 13:30–16:30, at @natural.law , Verbier. Cyanotype: sun printing on treated paper. Friday 30 to Saturday 31 October, in Sarreyer with @le.baron.perche. Collagraph, over two days in a 200-year-old barn. You build a plate from leaves, stems and fabric, ink it and press it, then leave it overnight. The work changes when you come back to it rested, and the second day usually goes somewhere you didn’t plan. Come gather creatively this October. On my walk with Juno this morning, I picked up some de-rooted Marigolds. The gardens here are already being ”pulled out” for the season. On my way home, I met my neighbour Daniel who told me I could still get the grains from them, and plant them next year. When I came home, I realised I needed to take care of all the fallen apples I had temporarily put in the fire pit. When I started to dig into it, I realised there was beautiful clay-like soil underneath them, as a natural compost had formed with the charcoal. I went with the rotten apples to the village garden dump, and to my happy surprise, found the rest of the de-rooted Marigolds. So as I came home again, I planted the Marigolds in the apple-composted soil, and pulled out the grains from the dried flowers as Daniel had taught me. Things naturally falling into place🌼 by @le.baron.perche
Preppin with @lachaise.community, what a joy. We made a Gaspacho together, using only vegetables from the garden. Including melon!! It usually doesn’t grow here, but all the sun made it so sweet. We talked about the barn and what we could do there together, stay tuned. #swissalps #creativecommunity #artinthemountains #localfood by @le.baron.perche
Things have got slightly out of hand in my vegetable patch and at the gardens at the edge of the village. Although it has been really dry, and watering has been needed and restricted, the magic is in the soil here. Zucchinis turning into giants. Pumpkins claiming their personal space. Tomatoes and kohlrabi are arriving faster than I can prepare them. This time of the year, breakfast, lunch and dinner starts with a walk outside and a look at what needs eating next. If you’d like taking over some of this delicious pressure: Le Baron Perché has a few airbnb stays still available at the end of September and throughout October. Whatever is growing in the garden comes with the stay. Link in bio. by @le.baron.perche
Founded in 1938 in Evolène, Marie Métrailler’s weaving workshop made it possible to develop both skilled craftwork and a fulfilling activity that secured the village women’s financial independence. To produce the clothing, household linens, and textile goods needed for farming life, the back-and-forth motion of the shuttle echoed in every village home. Weaving skills for cloth and sheets were essential in a self-sufficient economy. Marie Métrailler adapted this weaving craft to meet the demands of the market and of tourists. The town of Evolène got all dressed up and honoured the traditions of Valais today at their yearly ”mid-summer” celebration (fête de la mi-été). The town has around 1600 inhabitants, and today around 7000 people came to witness the beauty of their traditions! Such a lovely way to keep the heritage alive and celebrate all together, big and small! #valais #traditionsuisses by @le.baron.perche
The music journey continues as I went on a wonderful music and art walk to celebrate the Verbier 3D foundation. Learning about the water flows in the region, in combination with classical music and poetry with our beloved mountain landscape as a backdrop- or as a protagonist, as suggested by the poet in Residence Carmen Campo Real, as she responds to the exhibition’s central concern, the fragile future of alpine water and glacial landscapes, with two original poems, Eau and Montagne, written in the valley itself. In spare, sensory verse, she gives voice to the mountain as a living body and water as an act of surrender. Celebrating Nature, creativity and community, we ended the walk with cheese and sausage from the Alpage de La Chaux.
