As part of Saison Méditerranée, LE 18 is partnering with Jeu de Paume to extend 𝘓𝘢 𝘕𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘮é𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦, Laila Hida’s solo exhibition, curated by Jeanne Mercier. Through films, publications and conversations, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘺𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘮 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦 explores how images shape places, narratives and desires. From the city as a dreamlike setting of cinema to the palm tree as a displaced, planted and reinvented figure, the programme focuses on mythologised spaces and the imaginaries they produce, between lived landscape and imagined landscape.

Published as part of Laila Hida’s exhibition 𝘓𝘢 𝘕𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘮é𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦 with Jeu de Paume, 𝘔𝘦𝘫𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭, 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘫𝘰𝘰𝘭 extends the artist’s research into the date palm, its displacements and the cinematic imaginaries it has shaped between Morocco and California.

𝟴.𝟯𝟬 𝗽𝗺 - Screening of 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘒𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢 by Laila Hida (2025)

Shot on 16 mm, the video evokes a landscape between oases, desert and trans-Saharan crossings. Though the landscape never fully appears, it reveals itself through an array of characters who project themselves into it, recount it or cross it. It thus takes shape for the viewer as an imaginary geography, where memory, desire and resistance coexist.

𝟵 𝗽𝗺 -  Screening of 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘦 by Terra Long (2023) @_terrapin

Terra Long’s first feature film explores California’s Coachella Valley, an agricultural territory shaped by the cultivation of date palms, economic transformations, immigration policies and climate change. Filmed on 16 mm and hand-developed using local plants, the film inscribes the landscape into its very materiality.

🌴 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘆𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲

🌗 MOKHTABAR PHOTOZINE مختبر

Mokhtabar Photozine is the outcome of the workshops conceived as part of @maidelaphotomarrakech 2026 with the youth of Dar Bellarj.

Across the pages of the zine, the medina of Marrakech unfolds through the perception of its young inhabitants, their memories, their sense of space, and the intersections between them. Personal memory meets a collective one, with Dar Bellarj at its center.

The four-day workshop covered different aspects of analogue film development, photographic processes, film formats, shooting, negative processing, darkroom printing and analogue-to-digital process.

Mokhtabar photozine sits at the meeting of the unseen and the seen, the light and darkness, the individual experience of the image and its collective resonance.

The photozine is available for sale at LE 18 bookstore and Dar Bellarj.

Moments from the 2nd Fellowship Colloquium 💜

Last week, the 2025/2026 NAAS Research Fellows gathered for their second and final in-person Colloquium at @le18marrakech. They were joined by their Fellowship mentor @omarbrrd, NAAS’s director Nada Bakr, and the wonderful LE 18 team.

After months of research under @omarbrrd’s mentorship, the fellows’ work is now taking public form.

@idtnaineomar opened his exhibition on Tamazight-language cinema in Morocco, tracing decades of grassroots efforts to preserve films long left out of the country’s official film history.

@nouayda also presented her public program on translation in film. Through screenings and conversation, she explored subtitles not as neutral tools, but as their own creative and contested terrain.

@amelk_ and Kalfat shared their public program plans with the group and gathered feedback ahead of their own presentations.

The week also included workshops, a visit to Mostafa Dziri’s apartment, an evening at the Dar al-Ma’mûn library, a tour of @darbellarj by the director of the foundation @maha_el_madi, and of the Archéologies exhibition by curator and founder of @le18marrakech, @laila_in_transition 💛

Stay tuned for more details on each fellow’s program soon. Huge thanks to LE 18 for hosting us throughout the week! taken in Marrakech, Morocco by @le18marrakech

Songs of Opacity // أناشيد العتامة // ⵉⵣⵍⴰⵏ ⵏ ⵜⴰⵍⵍⴰⵙⵜ

23 - 25 July 2026
At LE 18

[For Arabic and Tamazight check pinned comments]

Entitled Songs of Opacity, this second iteration of the Complicity and Conspiracy in Film Translation program follows the program's first edition in Beirut in March 2025. It suggests the audio-visual medium as a space that can host the complex and nuanced interactions between the oral and the written. Rather than providing an unquestioned access to another language, the films in this edition focus the subtitle as a threshold of connection and meaning in unusual and unexpected ways.

Link in bio for detailed information on the program and the films.

This program is curated by Nour Ouayda in collaboration with LE 18 and Omar Berrada and is realized in the framework of NAAS’ curatorial fellowship 2025-2026.

ⵣ TIFINAGH ON SCREEN

This exhibition is curated by Omar Idtnaine
in collaboration with LE 18 and Omar Berrada,
realised in the framework of NAAS’ curatorial fellowship 2025–2026.

@idtnaineomar @omarbrrd @naas_network

EXHIBITION OPENING
Thursday, 23ʳᵈ July 2026

6pm - 9pm
at LE 18 Marrakech

23.07 – 30.07.2026

“Tifinagh on Screen” is more than just a title; it is a statement of presence. The emergence of the first Amazigh film in 1991 was not a mere cinematic experiment, but a historic moment in which the region’s most ancient script became intertwined with the motion of image and sound. This exhibition, arising from an in-depth research project on “Reclaiming Archives as Counter-History” funded by NAAS (Network of Arab Alternative Screens), traces the fragile yet persistent trajectory of this cinema: born from individual initiatives, far from institutional support, yet able to carve out its own audience and memory.

From early films like “Tamghart Ourgh” to contemporary productions, the exhibition presents visual, audio, and textual documents that have long remained in the shadows. It pays tribute to the efforts of producers, directors, actors, and screenwriters whose work constitutes an essential chapter in Morocco’s cinematic and cultural history. Through posters, photographs, VHS and VCD covers, and never-before-seen archival materials, “Tifinagh on Screen” tells the story of cultural resistance and identity affirmation.

The exhibition also explores the production and distribution conditions of this parallel cinema, its technological evolution, the role of audiences and associations in its sustainability, and the current challenges it faces. It affirms that a Morocco open to itself is one that embraces the diversity of its cultures, without hierarchy among languages and memories, and that this diversity is an inexhaustible source of collective wealth. by @le18marrakech
