Excited to share my first piece of furniture I’ve designed & made by hand at @hjerleid

Nidarosdomen inspired bench.
Made with Birch, Oak, and patience.

When my mother surprised me with a trip to @nidarosdomen I immediately fell in love with the architecture. This portal specifically seemed so unique and inspired me to learn how it was created, so I could design a bench off the arch alone as a thank you gift to remember the trip.

My concept for this bench was as if the top Birch plank was found as an artifact and to be given a second life with a practical purpose. Therefore there’s no screws used and the supporting Oak legs act as a clamp and support the bench to stand with a slight angle inwards to “preserve” the plank without altering its state.

After sleepless nights of watching medieval architecture documentaries to learn their design methods, I hit a dead end on the triple arch after a few dozen drawings. I came close! but it still wasn’t close enough.

Thankfully @magnus_vartdal came to the rescue and showed me step by step on how to draw the arches with nothing but a compass and ruler 🙏🏼

24hrs into Dovre, Norway. Where I’ll be attending Hjerleid school for the next 2 years to study traditional Scandinavian design. Learning to build my ideas has always been a dream of mine, and today that dream has come true!

From loosing my Norwegian citizenship and facing deportation, after the government and police gave me advice to move to Norway (long story lol), but if you know me well, you know I don’t take No for an answer. I don’t give up, ever. I’ve fought my way through and won my citizenship back and now I get to experience Norway for what it really is. I can’t wait to share with you my projects to come, because there’s so much I need to get off my chest, and that will come through my designs 🙏🏼
