I did it! I’ve officially signed up for a full marathon next year.😆😅

It’s been a long time coming… something that’s been on my bucket list for years. After a few failed attempts to kickstart my running era, I finally feel mentally and physically ready to give it a real shot.

Who would’ve thought the little girl who avoided every crosscountry race or running event would now be attempting to conquer 42 kilometres? I’m honestly just so excited to see how far I can push both my body and my mind. The only thing standing in my way… is me.

After dealing with a hamstring injury over the past month, I’ve officially kicked off my marathon training program this week.

The plan is simple: 1. stack up the KS, 2. don’t get injured and 3. stay consistent.

Hey there! 👋🏽

Welcome to my dedicated fitness page which I intend to use as my fitness diary, and hopefully inspire other women, especially mums, to find themselves and prioritise their physical wellbeing.

At the start of this year, I realised something needed to change. I didn’t feel confident. I was self conscious about my body. I still wasn’t back to my prebaby weight.
I felt weak, lethargic, and honestly… I’d just stopped taking care of myself and it started affecting my mental health.
I was barely keeping active, maybe one run a week, a little yoga, and the gym session once in a while.

So I made a promise to myself: to stay consistent, even if it was only one thing a day… a walk, yoga… anything to keep moving.

But then I signed up for an 8-week challenge at our community gym… and it changed everything.
I learnt new exercises, how to actually use the equipment properly, proper technique and form, and how to design a program tailored to my goals.

At the start of the year I couldn’t do a single pull-up, now I can do seven. I could barely do one push-up, now I’m doing over 30!
I also got back into running. I committed to three runs a week. Now I’m up to six, and love it so much I signed up for a full marathon 🫣.

I feel the strongest, fittest, most confident, and most importantly I feel like myself again. And now that I’m in my 30s, I truly understand how important it is to build a well-rounded routine focused on mobility, functionality, strength and cardiovascular health which is why I try to do a bit of everything.

So if you’re anything like me, just trying to better yourself physically and mentally, I hope my journey inspires you to take that next step towards becoming the best version of you.

Wow… it still hasn’t fully sunk in yet that I just ran 42.2km. What felt like forever during the race is now a memory and an experience I’ll cherish forever.

People ask why anyone would willingly put themselves through that kind of pain. For me, it was never just about running a marathon. It was about proving to myself that I’m capable of more than I think. Even when my mind and body wanted to stop, I knew I was finishing regardless.

I’m so grateful I got to experience this journey with my husband @bingaa3. We trained together, kept each other accountable, pushed through the pain, lifted each other up, and after months of hard work, we crossed the finish line together. I’ll never take that for granted.

Having our family and friends @wazza_cabban @travis.mantua @clintonmanzo on the journey made it even more special. Watching each of you overcome your own challenges was inspiring. And I’m so thankful to everyone who supported us, trained with us, encouraged us, and believed in us along the way. Special shout out to our amazing support crew on the day @honeyy_joyy @stinestodio @monica.rys

Above all thank you God. Going into race day, I wasn’t sure how my injury would hold up after feeling it the day before and that morning. Somehow it barely affected me until the final 8km. Even then, I felt God’s presence carrying me, giving me the strength to keep putting one foot in front of the other when my body wanted to stop. I even received a sign at the moment I needed it most.

This marathon reminded me that we’re capable of far more than we think, and that with faith, perseverance, and the right people beside you, anything is possible.

I’m proof that anyone can do it, you’ve just got to believe it yourself. 🤍🏅 Onto the next one!

I’ve been enjoying the track sessions with the hubby, especially now that its dark so early.

It’s nice to have a softer surface to run on every once in a while, and it’s motivating seeing others out there at night training for all kinds of athletics, especially the regulars who show up week in and week out.

It’s sad to say that I won’t be racing the Parramatta Half Marathon tomorrow. Despite consistent training and preparation, I recently picked up an injury from the continuous strain and impact of running.

I had to make the tough decision to pull out if I want to give myself the best chance of making the full marathon (the actual goal) in a few weeks.

Looking back, my biggest mistake was leaving it too late and thinking stretching, rolling, and my own rehab would fix it. A reminder to take my own advice and get things checked early.

Thankfully, my amazing friend @iameeethan the magician that he is - has been working his magic, and my injury is starting to feel much better. But it looks like I’ll still need to dig deep and push through some tough moments if I want to get through the marathon.

This week I purposely took time off to let my body heal, prioritising extra sleep and rest. I’m also so grateful that my homegirl @jo_buhagiar will be taking my place in the race tomorrow. Somehow it feels like it was meant to happen because she’s been secretly training for this without even realising it 😂

I know she’s going to absolutely smash it tomorrow, and I’m excited to be on the sidelines cheering on all my friends and family as they get out there and give it everything ❤️ by @lea.mitless

Trying to find alternatives to highly processed sugary running gels because consuming that much sugar in one go doesn’t feel great to me.

So I tried using only maple syrup on my run. It actually worked really well for the first half, but after a while I noticed my energy dipped and I started cramping.
I’ve seen some people add salt and crushed magnesium, so I might experiment with that next time.

But maple syrup on its own: 10/10 for taste and texture, 6/10 as the sole energy source by @lea.mitless

Now that I’m back at work, i don’t have the luxury of spending hours in the gym.

So these days, I try to combine my workouts so i can get the most out the time I have. Sometimes that means skipping weights training all together so i can prioritise my kms.

This is my go-to upper body workout that covers most of the main muscle groups.

Workout includes:
- Shoulder press
- Single arm dumbbell row
- Dumbbell bench press
- Bicep curls
- Lateral raises
- Front raises
- Lateral pull downs
- Face pulls

Starting a new job has meant adjusting my priorities and learning to work with less time than I used to have for my training and creating content.

Right now, my focus is finding a balance between work, mum life, and marathon training. With race day approaching, recovery and consistency are more important than pushing myself to the point of burnout.
I’ve temporarily stepped away from heavy strength sessions and am concentrating on running strength, technique, and stacking kms.

For me, trusting in the process means not pushing myself too hard, knowing when my body needs to break and making sure I prioritise sleep when I can. by @lea.mitless

With the sunsetting earlier and days getting colder, it’s getting harder to find the motivation to run. But having a crew and best running partner makes it so much easier. by @lea.mitless

24km run done and dusted… but wow, it took a lot out of me. I could barely walk afterwards. My body was shaking and felt like it was shutting down.

The first 16kms felt great, I was even enjoying the run (I thought maybe I’d finally found that elusive runner’s high). But with 8kms to go, everything started to break down. My feet were in so much pain it felt like I was running barefoot on the pavement. My right knee had a constant sharp pain, my left hip ached with every stride, and my body had very little energy left to get me through the final 2kms.

What I learnt afterwards was that I wasn’t fuelling properly throughout the run. I wasn’t consistently topping up every 25 minutes to maintain my energy levels, and I didn’t have any electrolytes to help prevent the inevitable cramps from kicking in.
If you’re training for your first race, whether it’s 21 or 42kms. I’d definitely suggest doing your research on what supplements or fuel sources you should be taking during your run to keep your glycogen levels topped up. For me, it’s been trial and error. But my friend Waz gave me some great advice: sip your electrolyte drink every 15 minutes, and take an energy gel or other fuel source every 25 minutes on the dot… otherwise you may end up experiencing what I did.

Hopefully my own experience can help others better prepare for their long runs. by @lea.mitless
