‘I like things a bit gritty’ is a love affair with mud. Mud is what holds us up, supports our homes, grounds this earth.

I like to get a feel of a place through its mud.

These works are made with collected local clays and rocks, grounding me when things aren’t so familiar. Showing me the beauty of a place.

On now @gallery.alchemy alongside stunning paintings by @tazwitkamp.artist

Opening do is Saturday night at 6. It would be wonderful to see you there. taken in Gallery Alchemy by @lea_durie

Fieldwork

A show of shared exploration of the natural environment close to in our suburban homes. Those precious places that sustain us.

@janettakerrgrant and I live 700km apart but have shared this exploration through weekly chats and walks. I collect clay and rocks on my walks and use it to make work that grounds home back to this beautiful box gum woodland on Ngunnawal and Ngambri country.

Now we’re are almost ready to show it to you. We open a month from now @o.k.violet

Opening 14th Nov. come and celebrate with us. by @lea_durie

New work fresh out of the kiln as I prepare for my upcoming show Fieldwork with @janettakerrgrant in Melbourne @o.k.violet .

This show comes from spending time the spaces that sustain our suburban lives. I’ve been getting to know my new neighbourhood, on the edge of an endangered box gum woodland, through daily walks, material foraging and digging for clay, which all become part of the work and tell a story of this place.

Janetta and I have been meeting weekly online for some time now and preparing for this show with chats about our work and process. It’s been a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to showing you what has come out of it.

Opening Nov 14th.

I’m at the airport ready to fly to Japan, so I’ll be sharing some exhibition peeks and Japan highlights the next few weeks. by @lea_durie

While things have been quiet here I’ve been doing a lot of making. Testing methods and exploring ideas around our place as humans in the multi species world that is the suburbs and nearby more natural areas, and also what queer perspectives can bring to that inquiry.

I’ve got lots of new work for an upcoming show in November I’m looking forward to sharing with you. But first here is one of the small assemblages I have made exploring those ideas. The first aid cross and bricks make a comeback, local McNamara clay gets involved too. Do we have what we need? will be part of the upcoming members show @craft_design_canberra opening this Thursday night. It’s always an excellent show and I’m glad to be part of it. by @lea_durie

New work coming out of the kiln.

Some good, some fails, some exciting. Always learning and listening to what the material has to tell me.

Capturing the box gum grassy woodland that surrounds the studio @strathnairnarts using materials foraged on walks in the area.

My work is grounded in fieldwork and material exploration. I am particularly interested in geo materiality and the memories of place they contain.

It always excites me the variety of clay and rock from one spot to the next, only a short walk apart.

I’m off for a walk 😊 by @lea_durie

We've been incredibly lucky to host some amazing guest ceramicists in the studio throughout May and June, sharing their skills, stories and unique approaches to clay with our community.

And we're thrilled to continue the journey in July with the wonderful @lea_durie from mud.dept

Make a Wall Sculpture with Lea Durie is a full-day workshop exploring clay as a sculptural and expressive medium. Lea's work is known for its rich textures, organic forms and intuitive mark-making, and she'll guide participants through the process of creating a unique wall-hung clay sculpture that is both personal and deeply connected to the material.

This is a workshop about slowing down, trusting your hands, embracing texture and allowing the clay to lead the way. Whether you're new to ceramics or an experienced maker, you'll leave with a one-of-a-kind sculptural piece and a fresh perspective on working with clay.

Saturday 25 July | Full Day Workshop | 9:30 - 4:00
Cost: $210 per person includes clay and firing
Spaces are limited and bookings are essential.

Shifting,Sheeting has been selected as a finalist in the Pro Hart Outback Art Prize.

This piece emerged from lane wanderings and clay foraging while on a residency to Broken Hill earlier this year. It’s a city I first visited in 2019 and keep being drawn back to.

The exhibition is on @brokenhillcityartgallery from 15 August until 2 Sept.

I’m excited to be showing amongst an outstanding bunch of artists. by @lea_durie

I Like Things a Bit Gritty is a collection of pieces which individually and together explore the many messy ways I experience and feel at home in suburban/town spaces. Using walking and muddly material play I explore these new surroundings. I seek out the odd, gritty, untidy things. Bit by bit a place will start to imprint itself, become part of my knowing, street by street, tree by tree, line by line. With each exploration I find more moments of delight, and gradually I can care about and for this place.

This beautiful new body of work by Lea reflects the subtle tensions and quiet joys of moving from a 160-year-old rural cottage to a brand new suburban home — and the search for connection in unfamiliar ground.

Lea’s stunning new collection will be featured in our next exhibition, Cellophane. Join us for opening night: Saturday June 7th, 6–8pm.

I think I always loved making things with mud.

I love its strength and its vulnerability. I love how it can quietly hold up our homes, but chose not to in a moment. I love how it’s kind of weird and beautiful once it’s fired.

Earthy, queer, solid and honest. Of only one place, unique and full of vitality.

Like us really.
