New leaders deserve more than "figure it out as you go."

So I made you a toolkit that includes six email templates that you can copy and paste to lead with clarity, boundaries and psychological safety.

If you ever wished someone would just give you the words....this is it.

Being queer shouldn't make a difference.
No one cares if people are straight, so why does the LGBTQI+ community feel the need to have parades, say they are gay....make a big deal out of it??!!
......and I couldn't agree more.

Ko SJ tōku ingoa 👋
For those that don't know me, Kia ora! Until my late 20s I was in denial about my sexuality and predominantly dated men. That means I know the privilege that comes with heterosexual relationships, and understand why people think being gay isn't a big deal and can share my experience and perspective.

🟣 When asked what I am doing for the weekend at night school, do I 'out' myself and tell them I'm attending the Pride Parade, which is a proud and important piece of work I do through my day job? Risk people treating me differently?
🟣 Being careful with using the term wife or partner, depending who I am around.
🟣 When traveling, is it safer for my wife and I to come across as friends? We have also avoided cities/countries for this reason.
🟣 Attending antenatal classes and the material refers to Mum & Dad - families are made up in many different ways.
🟣 I am a Māmā, but as I didn't carry, questions get asked to my wife, as if I wouldn't know any of his measurements, or know how WE look to raise him.
🟣 As the non-carrying parent, being asked if my son is 'used to me yet?'.....I have no words for this one.

Until the time comes that everyone can live without facing these experiences, a deal needs to be made, to educate and show that we do exist in all areas of life, deserve to be and are capable of such.

I am here to be the queer representation in corporate leadership that I wish I had 🌈 by @leadher.withsj

Seeking feedback from outside of your team is the biggest way to obtain true, authentic and genuine reflections.

Those that you work closer to sometimes struggle to give constructive feedback because they don't want to rock any boats. Wherea by @leadher.withsj

Lesson #3 in the Back to Leadership Basics workshop, because being a leader is hard so any insights, or handy tips that can save you time and mental capacity, I refuse to gatekeep!

Quick steps are exactly that, quick ways to send regular emails or meeting invites. I personally have them set up for:
- Monthly 1:1 catch up invites
- Annual performance reviews invites
- Setting expectations email
- Post 1:1 email to have follow up actions in writing
....there's so many ways to use these!

Am I the only one???? 🤣

Not that there is such thing as looking gay, let alone gay enough. There are stereotypical mannerisms and appearances but they don't define ones sexuality. Yet, here I am every now and then feeling both privileged for my straight passing (especially when traveling with my wife), but also worried I don't look gay. It's a funny thought......

I don't want anyone to feel like they can't do something because there is no visibility of someone like them succeeding in said area.

That is why LeadHer Studio exists.

The content is suitable for any leader to use, learn, embed, because I believe in inclusivity. However the primary focus is to provide representation of corporate queers and/queers in leadership.

Being a leader is hard. But it is equally rewarding when the hard work starts to pay off.

When you see your people grow, it really is the BEST THING EVER!

I've said it so many times in the last 6months to my team, but they have come a looooong way since I met them and started working with them 5 years ago.

❌Stressed
❌Not volunteering for anything
❌Using "it's always been this way" as a response
❌No desire to learn anything new

This year I've had out of this very small function within my team:
🟣2 staff successfully get new roles outside of my space, and 1 successfully get promoted within the team
🟣2 staff learning additional functions
🟣New ideas, solutions and desires to improve processes are being raised consistently
🟣Volunteering to pick up tasks that implement changes
🟣Contributing regularly to the wider team through our main pillars, without the need to follow up

I'm shook, and I'm incredibly proud of all of them!

Palmy Drag Fest last weekend was a fab time!

Feeling very privileged to feel safe being out and attending an event like this, when so many others are experiencing different journeys.

Some people for cultural, religious, legal (and many other!) reasons will never show up 100% authentically themselves, and that is incredibly unfortunate but very understandable. This International Coming Out Day, I think of you 🫶

Stay safe, and know that so many of us send aroha (love) your way.

Back to Leadership Basics #2 - Let's talk about email communications 🗓️

Stepping into leadership shouldn’t feel like guesswork. Especially for those of us navigating the corporate spaces that weren’t necessarily built with our identities, voices, or leadership styles in mind.

This toolkit provides you with templated emails that includes language you might not have been taught to use. Might I add, this wasn't part of the initial workshop but I didn't want to gatekeep resources that I already have available - you can thank me later 😉

Communicate clearly and confidently with integrity, boundaries, and psychological safety.

A quick and easy change is using a templated guideline to start those regular emails you send, saving you some brain power and time.

Let's work smarter, not harder! Leadership is hard enough some days.

Back to Leadership Basics #1 - Let's talk about meeting agendas 🗓️

No leader intentionally wants to make their staff anxious, stress or downward spiral because they have no idea what that "quick catch up" is regarding. But in reality, that is exactly how a lot of staff react.

An quick and easy change is using a guideline for your meeting makers moving forward that puts staff at ease by giving them a high level of why the meeting exists, how the meeting will look and what you aim to achieve. Added bonus, you then use that meeting invite top open the meeting and reiterate the intentions and expected outcomes.

The points I was taught to use 8years ago by my own coach, and still continue to use today:
🟣I'm booking in this meeting so we can.....
🟣We will do this by ........
🟣The expected outcome or this meeting is.......
🟣This is important because......

I'm actually genuinely so excited!!

Coaching and supporting my team is one of my favourite parts of my role as a team leader. Showing up and representing the Rainbow community, making sure that others know they are welcomed and can be their true authentic selves is my favourite part of my roles as chair of the NZ Pride company, and co-chair of the global Pride company, that I work for. Now I get to combine the two 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Leadership is hard, busy, and some days out right overwhelming, and a cup of coffee just isn't going to do the trick.

Here is where Back to Leadership Basics comes into play as this months focus. Some key actions that you can pick up and implement and see changes immediately. I've made sure I've pulled out the parts that are easy, impactful and that in my experience, are some ways to stand out from you peers.

Keep your eyes out for upcoming content releases!
