POSTS STORIES REELS

When I went through Leadership Lancaster in 2000, one of the many things that made my experience so special was that our Executive Director, Nancy Neff, took each participant out for coffee and conversation.

I remember vividly sitting in a booth across from Nancy. I was a young leader, and I was nervous. Nancy sat and held space.

I shared with her my dreams and most importantly the things that were holding me back. She in turn shared her story and some much-needed advice. It meant SO MUCH that she invested this personal time.

I want to pay this experience forward to our current class.

This year we have 59 core class members. Would you be a part of their leadership journey by sponsoring a coffee and conversation? I am suggesting a donation of $10 but you are always welcome to give more!

In return, I invite you to write a brief message of encouragement. When I meet for coffee with each participant, I will share which LL alumnus is treating us to coffee, in addition to your message.

It’s a great way to connect our amazing alumni network with our current class and it makes a huge impact!

Thank you in advance! Click here to donate a coffee and conversation.

Your voice matters. Your community matters. Make them count.

Leadership takes many forms, and participating in our democracy is one way we each have an opportunity to shape the communities we call home.

This Election Day, make your voice heard. Get out and VOTE! by @leadlanc

From Jenn, our Executive Director:

In the past year, I have heard people say, “I wouldn’t have coffee with that person,” simply due to their political party.

My response is always, “Well, then how will we ever move the needle forward if we can’t sit across from each other over a hot beverage?”

Then, in June, I had the unique opportunity to spend a month in Spain walking the Camino de Santiago. Whether I was in a tiny village or a big city, I experienced the beautiful way that Spanish culture uses food to build connection, community and deepen relationships. The table is an invitation to slow down, linger and make room for one another.

As I continued to walk, with lots of time to think, I wondered what it would be like to use food and shared stories to connect us. And so, the idea for “Across the Table” was born.

For Public Policy Day in our Executive Class, we have historically invited elected officials to participate in a panel and answer questions from our senior-level leaders.

What would it look like if we invited both groups together in an intimate setting, without titles or political parties attached to their introductions? Just first names, an incredible four-course dinner, and an invitation to get to know the person across the table. How would building relationships through food and shared stories change conversations moving forward?

Last night, we found out as eight elected officials and 17 community leaders gathered at the gorgeous Drumore Estates.

Each course came with a story prompt to encourage conversation beyond parties and politics. Between courses, we rotated groups so everyone had the chance to connect with someone new.

And it worked. There was laughter. There were stories. There was the discovery of shared interests and commonalities all across the table.

As we wrapped up the evening, one elected official shared that he had connected with people he never would have imagined having a conversation with.

And that’s how it begins. One shared meal. A willingness to listen. A chance to see one another as fellow humans, across the table.

How many more coffees will be shared after last night? I can’t wait to find out. by @leadlanc

What does your toothpaste have to do with public policy? More than you think.

From the toothpaste you use to the roads you travel, public policy shapes our everyday lives in ways we don’t always recognize.

In the latest Leadership Exchange blog, Kat Gastineau, Director of Education & Advocacy at YWCA Lancaster, explores the connection between public policy, civic engagement, and leadership, and why showing up to vote is one way we can help shape the future of our communities.

With Election Day coming up on Tuesday, November 3, now is the time to make a plan, get informed, and use your voice.
