About a year ago in Norway. 🇳🇴

Reunited with my good friend @stoffen2 after far too long and what better way than a few unforgettable days of red deer hunting together in the Norwegian mountain valleys.

Great hunting in the beautiful landscapes. Some moments stay with you.

ICON Xtri – This time, DNF

My rear brake hydraulics started failing after just 20 km. I kept going for another 40 km, hoping I could somehow fix them. My last chance was the organizer’s aid station at the top of Stelvio, but no mechanic was available. By then, my rear brake had completely gone. Game over.

And just to add to my bad luck… I got a flat tire right before the summit.

After months of preparation, stopping was an incredibly difficult decision. But descending Stelvio like that was simply too dangerous.

A huge thank you to the support crews of my fellow athletes. So many people tried to help and offered support when I needed it most. ❤️

And massive respect to every ICON who conquered this incredible race. What an achievement! This race was a real challenge!

This was supposed to be my last race of the season, so it hurts to end it this way. But luckily, the organizers have given us another chance to return next year.

So, the dream of conquering these mountains lives on!

So, what does it feel like to climb Passo dello Stelvio, the second highest paved mountain pass in Europe?

The altitude definitely has an effect on your oxygen uptake, meaning your heart rate runs quite a few beats higher than usual and keeps creeping up the higher you climb.

The climb is basically continuous, starting at around 900 meters above sea level and going all the way up to roughly 2,750 meters. The average gradient is fairly manageable, although there are some steep sections along the way. A couple of times I could definitely have used an easier gear, but luckily there was enough power left in the legs to grind my way up. 😄

The route has 48 seemingly endless hairpin bends. You basically have to keep telling yourself, “Just one more turn”, after every single turn.

Of course, you could take it easier and stop for breaks more often, but where’s the fun in that?

The air was completely still and hot, 28°C according to my Garmin. At least the weather was a bit more comfortable at the top.

After nice lunch at the top (there are restaurants), it was time to descend all the way back down to where I started… and that was one hell of a ride! Fast, exciting, and at times pretty dangerous.

At one point on the descent, I was doing around 50 km/h when a car suddenly appeared from behind a corner, coming fast and driving right in the middle of the road. The driver spotted me at the very last second and moved back onto their own side… I may have let out a couple of swear words at that point. 😅

Thousands of cars, motorcycles, buses and cyclists travel up and down Stelvio every day, so there’s definitely no shortage of traffic.

The climb took around 2.5 hours, with roughly 25 km from the village to the summit.

Not a bad little warm up for the upcoming race. 😉

Back to where it all began🤠

About a year ago, Konsta and I started planning this fishing adventure. After months of waiting, preparations, and a lot of anticipation, we finally made it happen.

We hiked into the wilderness of the Varanger Peninsula. Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, endless silence, and untouched nature, it was one of those rare places where you instantly feel at peace.

The fishing wasn’t always easy. Changing conditions kept us guessing, but after a bit of tactical thinking, we usually managed to find the right “tools” to convince a salmon to bite.

Spending several days hiking and camping completely outside mobile coverage. It was incredibly refreshing to disconnect from the digital world. For the first time in a long while, work never crossed my mind, not even for a moment. That kind of peace is something we all need every now and then.

The grand finale was the legendary Alta River, where our Ella had won our fishing permits through the annual lottery. The river stayed quiet for most of the time-few fresh fish entered the system, and the salmon seemed determined to keep their mouths shut.

Then, at the very last moment, everything changed.

@saarinen_ilkka landed an absolutely huuu-ge monster. And for now, it still holds the title of the biggest salmon of the season on the Alta River.

More details and probably a few stories we can’t tell just yet-will come later… once the fisherman have fully recovered from both the trip and the celebrations. 😂🎣

A huge thanks to my fishing companions for another unforgettable adventure. A very special thanks to @konstardr , an experienced wilderness angler with knowledge of the Varanger Peninsula, who planned our hiking expedition from start to finish.

I’m truly grateful to spend time with people like-minded, sharing experiences, learning from one another, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Until the next adventure.

IRONMAN Switzerland Thun🇨🇭

3,8km swim, 180km bike, 42km run

Finishing time 🏁 11:35:56

Well… what a day. 😅

IRONMAN Thun kicked my butt a lot harder than my first full IRONMAN in Portugal. But somehow I still managed to finish about 30 minutes faster, so I’ll definitely take that.

The day started with my stomach refusing to cooperate. My usual pre-race bathroom routine never happened, so I felt bloated from the start. Every gel and energy bar felt disgusting, but I just had to suck it up and keep eating.

Then the swim… The lake had been calm all week, but on race morning it turned into a whirlpool. For someone with less choppy water experience, it was a proper beating and cost me way more time and energy than I expected.

The bike wasn’t exactly smooth either. Strong wind gusts and around 2,200 meters of elevation gain, long climbs, technical descents… and my chain decided drop off every now and then. Luckily I managed to get it back on every single time without stopping, but it completely killed my rhythm and slowed my speed.

The marathon in the heat was brutal. By around the 30 km mark, my legs were completely wrecked, and my mind kept telling me to stop. It drains every last bit of energy out of you, but that’s what an IRONMAN marathon is all about, you just keep fighting, one step at a time.

As if that wasn’t enough, I ended up with a fever after the race, and my stomach is still giving me hell.

But here’s the thing… despite all of that, IRONMAN Thun was absolutely incredible. Racing through the Swiss Alps with the alphorns playing in the background was unreal. The scenery was breathtaking, the organization was top notch, and the volunteers and spectators were simply amazing.

Not every race is about a perfect performance. Sometimes it’s about keeping your head together when everything seems to be falling apart. This one was exactly that.

Huge thanks to everyone who cheered me on, both on the course and from back home. It means more than you know. ❤️

Now it’s time to get healthy, recover… and come back stronger. 💪

Last Sunday I raced the Challenge Samorin middle distance triathlon, and the conditions made it a tough day from start to finish.

The 1.9 km swim in 15°C water was a real shock to the system. Finding a proper rhythm was difficult from the start. The bike course brought strong crosswinds and headwinds for almost half of the 90 km ride, while the half marathon in 33°C heat felt like running through a desert at times.

Despite the conditions, the race had plenty of positive moments. I managed to overtake a lot of athletes on the bike and run, and broke several pb records during them. Finally finished strong toward the end of the race.

Final time: 5:07:30
9th place in my age group

Considering this is only my second race season and just the third triathlon race of my career, I’m genuinely happy with the result. After a long and cold winter of training, it’s rewarding to see that the hard work is paying off.

Recovery is already done, normal training has started again, and preparation for the next challenge is fully underway: full distance Ironman Thun in Switzerland in about a month. Big shoutouts to my coaches @alex_coh_coaching & @kuuskajaskari and my biggest supporter during the race, my Wifey. Thanks for being there through all the challenges.

Back to trainings after about a week off flu. Good to get moving again.

Spring conditions, light legs, and a solid reminder that consistency pays off. The gravel on the paths slowed things down a bit, but the effort still turned into solid 10K PR.

About two months until race season starts. The base is there and soon it’s time to build the peak💪. Looking forward when the real work begins @alex_coh_coaching
