I always meet interesting and nice people out hiking, backpacking and camping. There are people of all ages out on cool adventures. Other women ask me fairly often if I feel safe being out there alone. And that’s a very important discussion that I’m fully present for. I don’t discuss it with men but they also never ask. Which they shouldn’t. The one weird thing that happens and it surprises me everytime. Is when someone, oddly it’s only ever a woman who is with a man(and they always tell me they are parents of young children.) says “it’s so great that you’re getting out here” “good for you for hiking” or similar with some reference to my being an old person. Its a comment that comes out of nowhere in reference to nothing we are saying. This isn’t ever said during one of those safety or alone conversations. Usually some begnign weather or dog chat. And its fully a verbal pat on the head for being an old woman in the outdoors. The ICK I get from this is instantaneous. For real there are a lot of bears in the Sierra Nevada mountains. But some of those bear sightings are these guys. As always apologies to anyone we caused a fright on our most recent hikes. Hope we didn’t cause anyone to head back to the trailhead. One suggestion, sneaking down closer to watch the cinnamon phase bear swimming isn’t a good plan when it’s a really real bear.
