The real reason I took myself to Portugal? A fire cooking festival called Chefs On Fire.

Their ads found me on social media a few years ago, and I knew I needed to go. And I needed my fellow food-obsessed besties @ackfarmgirl and @foodflowersforest there with me. They answered the bat signal with gusto, rearranging their busy lives and schedules to make it happen.

I'd need the fingers on both hands to count how many times I teared up with joy this weekend. The incredible talent, the food, the thoughtful Portuguese values, the camaraderie. Eating and dancing and swimming and laughing with my friends in an incredibly beautiful setting. All of It.

I can't begin to describe the effort, thoughtfulness, elegance and professionalism the team at @chefsonfire.pt puts into this festival. Glass for everything, from wine to water. ZERO plastic. A fabulous app that worked seamlessly. And a massive team who kept the plates coming and the wine flowing, with smiles on their faces the whole time.
An experience I will never forget. Barcelona or Madrid, I'm coming for you next. 🔥

Just sharing my love of plants as usual, in this little progress report of year four at parker lane. So neat to see these perennials in this vertical garden just keep getting better the older they get. (there's a few veggies and new additions in there too; looking at you figwort!)

Passing on the VT tradition at @vontrappresort with my sister and family to these two kiddos is oh so special ♥️⛰️ and completing our annual pilgrimage to @fablefarm for @feastandfield always restores my faith in the human race.

Rita was the cornerstone of our family. In other words, she ran things. She radiated style, grace, and a sense of confidence and identity that could suck yours right out of the room. Her talents were vast, and if you weren't careful, her opinions could cut like a knife.

Her exquisite taste touched every facet of our lives: the gorgeous decor of the restaurant and our family's homes, her cars (the Mercedes convertible, the Saabs, the blue vintage Jaguar), our summers in the Stowe mountains, and our Christmas dinners together.

She fearlessly built and helmed a restaurant that employed her whole family and many others, and ran it successfully for twenty-five years. Hungry for adventure, she traveled extensively. She fed her insatiable restlessness closer to home by moving house a mind-blowing thirty-five times. She was generous beyond words, ready to help anyone without question.

Gammie, as we called her, was married to my Poppy, Carl, for seventy years, until she was suddenly left without him six years ago. I am so grateful for the healthy, memorable years we had together. No doubt, her zest for life contributed to her healthy and vibrant 97 year lifespan.

She rejoined him, peacefully, last week at the lake house on Leadmine, where they can sit by the water, hidden in the mountain laurel and surrounded by birdsong. That's where they'll stay, in my heart, protected by so many vivid and special memories of the two of them in that place.
