I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you but I’m deeply honored knowing you spent the rest of your life with me.

Toby was perfect. He was the most beautiful boy… I came across a craigslist post in 2021 and the listing was for rehoming a 3 year old husky german shepherd mix named Toby. The photo was so grainy and blurry but I could see he had the sweetest face. Christine and I went to meet Toby and we both instantly fell in love with him. He was so incredibly gentle, kind, affectionate, loyal, smart, too stubborn for his own good, and protective by his own standards. He loved being around people, whether it was friends and family or even any strangers that were willing to show him love… he’d never want the attention to stop!!

We only spent 4 years together, but it felt like a lifetime. He was the number one constant I had in my life when everything around me was changing. I’ve never experienced this type of pain before and I finally understand what people mean when they say the phrase “soul crushing.” It feels like I lost a part of myself because he was integrated in my identity and routine. If you knew me, you knew Toby. Days and nights would start and end with him. Times where I couldn’t get out of bed for myself I got up for him. Caring for Toby gave me a sense of purpose when I felt lost which is why this is so incredibly painful. I haven’t been wanting to sleep because every passing night feels like Toby drifts further from the world we shared and deeper into memory.

On October 8, Toby passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly from hemangiosarcoma, a type of rapid onset cancer that affected his spleen, heart, and liver. He was only 7 years old. I had so many more adventures and plans for our future, and I’m gutted that our time together was cut short.
