1: “Cheat days” don’t exist.
One big day of eating can erase a lot of the calorie deficit you built throughout the week. Instead of restricting all week and rewarding yourself with a massive cheat day, build the foods you crave into your week in a way that still fits your goals.
2. You don’t need a quick fix. You need foundation.
Start small. Go to the gym once a week. Then twice. Then more. Swap one high-calorie snack for a lower-calorie option. Choose the lower-calorie meal at your favorite fast-food spot. You don’t have to completely change your life overnight. Build habits that eventually become normal.
3. The scale can be addicting.
Big drops feel exhilarating. Plateaus feel disappointing. Eventually, you can become so attached to watching that number move that it starts affecting your entire mood. Keep making the right choices. The scale doesn’t need to reward you every single week for your progress to be real.
4. Your body will change before your brain catches up.
Have you ever looked back at an old photo when you were slimmer and thought, “I remember feeling fat here?”
That feeling doesn’t automatically disappear when you lose weight. I still sometimes feel like I’m at my heaviest, even though I’m no longer over 265 lbs. Sometimes I have to remind myself that my brain hasn’t completely caught up with what my body has already done.
5. Stop trying to be perfect.
The more pressure you put on yourself to do everything perfectly, the harder it becomes when you inevitably slip up.
It’s not about making zero mistakes. It’s about making good choices outweigh the bad ones. You’re going to have an off day. That’s okay. Get back to the foundation you’ve spent all this time building.

You got this.

1: “You have to give up your favorite foods!”
Well, yes, sacrifices are necessary to losing weight and maintaining weight loss, but not at the expense of enjoying what you eat. You can incorporate your favorite foods without going over in calories. You have to find enjoyment!
2: “You have to workout every single day!”
Listen to your body. Rest days are so important! I understand that it can feel like a failure to miss a few days, but your body needs it. There is a bunch of science regarding how detrimental it is to skip rest days. Allow your body to heal through all the hard work you’re doing. It isn’t a setback, it’s self-preservation.
3: “You need to lose weight quickly!”
Yo-yo dieting is never beneficial. Creating long-term foundations is so much more important and effective for MAINTAINING weight loss. You can make your own rules, and build what works for you. Start by changing some foods to lower-calorie ones, or lessening the amount of sauce you get at fast food places. Little changes build up so much over time!

Running doesn’t fix everything, but it has given my mind a break from some anxiety and stressors. I’m so glad I found an outlet that relieves some of that.
