Where paper, ink & time meet.
A few small souvenirs from Rome somehow found their way back onto my desk this week — and slowly into this image.
For the first time since my trip, I picked up my pen again and returned to Copperplate. Quietly, slowly, almost like muscle memory returning through ink.
The marbled book was hand bound by me, a study in texture, patience and paper. I choose a bookbindingpackage from @learnbookbinding Paired with leather, calligraphy and a little imperfection, it felt like the right way back into creating again.

My first experiment in half leather binding with supplies from @learnbookbinding and I couldn’t be more excited about how it turned out.

Craft is something that we are losing in our increasingly digital society, but returning to heritage crafts like this is so much more than just making things: it’s a way of looking at that world differently and cherishing the skills that have been hard won by our ancestors. Bit by bit, if we try and keep trying, we can learn to do really extraordinary things. (I have a lot more trying to do on bookbinding…!!) 🪡

Alongside calligraphy, I also love bookbinding, gilding, and haute couture embroidery. More than a notebook — a little piece of art made to hold thoughts, stories, and dreams.

Happy Mothers Day 🌸🤍

A huge thank you to Jon-Paul @learnbookbinding who produces the most beautiful bookbinding kits and talked me through the process to share with all the students. Www.learnbookbinding.co.uk

For Mother’s Day I combined two personal loves;
process art and a traditional craft form. So when they come together it’s a joy.

I love the mindful creative freedom of process art. The students played with water and watercolour with no end objective.

The students learnt about the basic anatomy of a book and the basic skills in creating their own notebook, using their artwork as the cover.

Some classes voted to make explosion books and used their art to create an abstract, cubism style explosion book, supplemented with charcoal daffodils, snowdrops and sunflowers to contrast.

It has been a huge labour of love with every signature individually sewn the traditional way and totally worth it. They are all so beautiful. So unique too! taken in Little Waltham, Essex, United Kingdom by @learnbookbinding

A few weeks ago I wandered through a museum of old texts and calligraphy in Den Haag (bookmuseum) Inspired, I bound a book myself again.  The miniature house full of tiny handmade books and old calligraphed pieces stole my heart ✨  Added some photos of the museum.

The notebook I created was a kit from @learnbookbinding

I have just added 12 new notebook cover paper designs to my shop - There are some absolute beauties amongst this latest batch, here’s one that I couldn’t resist making myself! 🍄 🐍 📚

As with all new designs, you’re able to customise your new notebook with your choice of book cloth & ribbon colours, plus lined, plain or dotted paper for the pages. I have my eye on a few more of these new additions that I’m going to make for myself, and as always I’m looking forward to seeing what cover paper / book cloth colour combos you guys come up with! ☺️📚

This design from Jemma Lewis has been one of my most requested “Refill Packs” this year - Every time it has passed over my packing desk here at Learn Bookbinding Towers I’ve thought “Hmmm, I’d like to make a notebook covered in that paper myself!” … I had an afternoon to spare last week, so that’s exactly what I did! ☺️
It was also an opportunity to test drive the beautiful antique copy press I picked up last year, after I finally found time to clean it up. It’s in remarkably good condition considering the age, they certainly knew how to make things to last back then! ☺️📚📚

First task of the day here at Learn Bookbinding Towers - wrestle with rolls of book cloth and turn them into stacks cut to size ready for my bookbinding kits …. Not my preferred job as it requires a fair amount of finger dexterity to wield my knife over & over - my fingers aren’t firing on all nimble cylinders just yet as my studio appears to have turned into a refrigerator the last week or two! ☺️📚📚🥶

Review: Creating the half-leather notebook of @learnbookbinding was an incredible experience! The materials are of superb quality, making every step a true pleasure. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, so even someone with just a bit of patience can succeed. This kit was the most challenging project I’ve tried so far, but that’s exactly what made it so rewarding. I learned so many new techniques, and seeing the finished notebook was absolutely satisfying.

If you’ve got a crafty loved one and have been thinking of popping one of my bookbinding kits in their stocking this year, the countdown is on to get your order in! 🎄☺️

Looking at the calendar my cut-off for being able to despatch orders placed for my Bookbinding Starter Kit is going to be midday on Friday 19th December. Any Starter Kit or Refill Pack ordered before that point will be handed over to Royal Mail before their deadline.

If you’re planning on ordering a kit or item that contains leather, hopefully you’re reading this & will order the items you require asap, since those items are a bit more involved - Monday 15th December would be a reasonably safe latest date to place an order for a leather kit (Half Leather Binding, Travel Journal or LongStitch Kit) & allow time for me to assemble it / despatch it by the deadline.

I always pull out all the stops to try and ensure every single order is shipped in plenty of time - but the way the dates fall this year my deadline will have to be slightly earlier than usual, I hate the thought of potentially letting one of you lovely lot down ... So, to summarise - if you’d like a Bookbinding Kit that contains leather to pop under the tree this year, better to place an order asap! ☺🎅📚
