@learning_through_outdoor_play is where we share snippets of our family’s year round outdoor home education journey in New England 🌦️

Our outdoor adventures include our backyard classroom and play area, the woods behind our house and abutting conservation land, local green spaces, nature based classes, co-ops and playgroups, farms, museums, playgrounds and the green spaces of and near friends and family. We are a blend of Waldorf and secular Charlotte Mason inspired education, and believe that learning happens best when it is organic, involves movement and play, and lots of mud, risky play and fresh air 🌬️

We have been early years outdoor home educating since Fall 2021 and now have a kindergartner and preschooler, with a baby tagging along for the ride. Follow along on our adventures of play, learning and wonder 🌱 by @learning_through_outdoor_play

My little car lover is now in a twin bed and I can’t believe he’s grown so quickly! 🥹 I made him a car that he can snuggle with and although it’s not perfect, he loves it! I only wish I had made it larger! *adds to mental craft projects list* 😊🚗🚙✨ taken in New England by @learning_through_outdoor_play

Numbers and math click so organically for my kindergartener and preschooler with Ms. Amber’s books from @forestfolkschool . We love the beautiful stories that bring math to life in a fun and cohesive way. The Math Processes book has wonderful word problem stories that are enjoyed by my kinder and preschooler. Her new book The Root of All Numbers has quickly become a favorite with my kindergartener and has really helped her make connections. In the Land of Living Numbers is another incredible addition to our beloved Ms. Amber collection, and will be perfect for when we start first grade in a few months! We can’t wait to dive in and explore math through stories, songs, handwork, rhythm activities, games, form drawing and nature walks and crafts. Her work has been an integral part of our homeschool! Check back soon for more, including info on her prewriting and early readers books, and let me know below if you have any questions!

✨These books were graciously gifted, and we are very grateful and happy to share our experience with them! Feel free to reach out, I love talking about Ms. Amber’s books! 📚

🥕🧅Carrot and Onion Friends! These little cuties, along with a Radish Friend (which I haven’t made just yet!), are part of the Veggie Friends patterns by Laura from @cosy.waldorf.fam . This was part of her Cosy Handwork Circle for May! I made mine with felt sheets instead of all roving because that’s what I had on hand. 😊🥕🧅🫜

🌸 I made my flower loving little one The Cherry Blossom Fairy Doll and her cherry blossom bed and bedding using @cosy.waldorf.fam Laura’s pattern, which was one of the exclusive April patterns for her Cosy Handwork Circle! I love making things by hand for my kiddos and Laura’s patterns and tutorials make it so fun and easy to learn new things. This pattern was the first time I successfully utilized French knots! 🧵🪡🌸🧚‍♀️💕 Check her out @cosy.waldorf.fam for more info! taken in New England by @learning_through_outdoor_play

🍀March snippets! Lots of play, rainbows, cooking together, signs of spring, and sewing. We were SO READY for spring! 😅 We also had an early Easter celebration with my sister! This month I made a celebration ring play mat (double sided rainbow/clover), felt four leaf clovers, a spring banner, and mended my kinder’s favorite pair of leggings. 💜

Wellness week with @wondergarten_earlychildhood came at a great time- right before the second blizzard this month. 😅❄️ We’ve made two batches of bone stock, three different soups and nearly daily lemon ginger honey tea since last week. My kinder has come to ask how nourishing any food or beverage we offer her is, which makes me laugh because she is our picky eater. She does love a good soup! 🍲 We make smoothies frequently, but wellness week has really sparked an interest in seeing how many colors they eat in a day. 🍅 🍊 🌽🥑 🫐 🍇 Handwashing has become much more fun for my 3 year old after this week as well. Thank you for a wonderful week, @wondergarten_earlychildhood ! ✨💛 taken in New England by @learning_through_outdoor_play

🍫Take a look at our Chocolate Week, which aligned perfectly with Valentine’s Day!

🍫We made 3 ingredient chocolates with @wondergarten_earlychildhood , tasted chocolate from around the world (a @traderjoes holiday gift someone gave me), made the fluffiest brownies, bone broth hot chocolate, and chocolate chip sourdough discard waffles. It was a wonderfully chocolatey week! 🥰🤎🍫 Chocolate watercolor printable by @elliebrookscreates 🍫❤️

❤️ Valentine’s Day gifts that I made for my kids this year- Valentine gnomes (this is the second year making them, per request of my oldest 🥰), hearts and name banners for each kiddo (inspired by @heyjenbrannen and using her letter template). I also made a heart garland with the help of my kinder (and @cosy.waldorf.fam Laura’s tutorial!) and a reversible play mat for our celebration ring for the month (the other side is a snowdrop)! ✨If you would like me to make a (free!) pattern for the playmat, let me know below by commenting PLAYMAT! 👇 ☺️

A glimpse at our past week! We really leaned into color theory this week and particularly exploring blue and yellow with @forestfolkschool . The yellow and blue go along with Candle week from @wondergarten_earlychildhood and represent the midpoint of winter and return of the sun, signaling the turning of the Wondergarten Star seasonal clock to blue. We made candles and a midwinter garden inspired by @cosy.waldorf.fam 💙💛🕯️ Our read alouds were filled with the adventures of the Gnomes of Wondergarten (“Halfway Through” chapter) of @wondergarten_earlychildhood , Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Tiptoes Lightly by Reg Downs and the kids have been playing gnomes, fairies and hobbits nonstop. 😊🧚💛💙🕯️ taken in New England by @learning_through_outdoor_play

🕯️Happy Candlemas! 🕯️

We have had a fun few days celebrating midwinter—Candlemas, Imbolc, and St. Brigid to welcome the return of the sun and the hope of spring. I channeled my inner @nathanielsantacruz of @wondergarten_earlychildhood with St. Brigid/Candlemas chalkboard art. For Saint Brigid’s feast day I made a Brigid peg doll, hung our Brigid’s Crosses we made last year, and included our Brat Bhríde (St. Brigid’s cloak) that we put outside overnight every year on January 31st to be blessed by St. Brigid.

I made a snowdrop play mat for our celebration ring that will double for Valentine’s Day on the reverse side. The kids and I made sheep to celebrate Imbolc, and we made an Imbolc garden and homemade candles inspired by @cosy.waldorf.fam to welcome spring. I’m currently making a Snowdrop Child doll using Laura’s pattern (part of the @cosy.waldorf.fam Cosy Handwork Circle)!

The snow moon also fell this weekend so we welcomed Faye the @fullmoonfairy back again! I finally got our full moon garland hung in our play area! 🤗🌕🧚

Today we turned our @wondergarten_earlychildhood seasonal Waldorf Star to blue to celebrate midwinter and this week we will be celebrating Candlemas more with Candle Week. Check back later this week for more of what we’ll be doing! You can use code LEARNING_THROUGH_OUTDOOR_PLAY to save 10% off your order if you were looking to purchase their curriculum, which is also available in a digital monthly format now! #affilate

Currently on our seasonal table (where everything is pushed back because otherwise our one year old pulls it all down 🫠. Not sponsored or gifted, just super big fans):

✨Green wooden gnomes: @shopwonderheart (which also double as our days of the week gnomes for Friday on our perpetual calendar setup)

❄️✨January recap:
Sick, soup, snow & snuggles (couldn’t help the alliteration 😊).
Aside from being sick and having my wisdom teeth removed (🙈), we did a lot of shuffling and combining of curriculum we had planned for the month. We skipped some things we just didn’t have the bandwidth for (baking and a few of the crafts we had planned), but we made up all of our core kinder goals so I’ll take that as a win! And I got my felt organized which makes my crafty mama heart so happy 🤗

This month with Wondergarten we blended the Cozy, Ice and Snow weeks and thoroughly enjoyed Game Week (we were feeling much better by then)! We’re looking forward to starting the February curriculum!

If you were looking to explore the Wondergarten curriculum but didn’t want to commit to a whole season, monthly Wondergarten curriculum are now available and you can use code LEARNING_THROUGH_OUTDOOR_PLAY
to save 10% off your order! #affilate taken in New England by @learning_through_outdoor_play
