"What principal is gonna let me in the door with Knives?!" That was just one challenge in the journey so far. It's nice to know now, that principals want Learn Local programmes back into their schools! This is a question I ask on a feedback survey and the answer is always yes. I have returned to schools and hope to return again next year!

If you are a principal and are interested in a culinary skills programme for your schools you NEED to do two things.

1. Check out my new website (link in bio)
2. Send me an email

I'll arrange a call with you before the end of June!

Sometimes, its just something as simple as preparing and sharing a meal.

Behind every statistic about food poverty is a child, a family and a story.

Our workshops are about more than food. They’re about giving children practical skills, positive experiences and a sense of possibility.

Because food education is not a luxury. It’s part of giving every child the best start we can.

Budget day in Ireland is tomorrow. My ask to those in power is to give us more support so we can get accessible, inclusive Food Education into every school. This is not watching videos and winning prizes.

We can run childrens cookery programmes in your school. Please reach out. by @learnlocalcookery

What's your why? It's Children's Cookery Classes.

It's hard. It's all hard. I keep telling myself "play the long game"

Funding applications, grant openings, proposal after proposal.

Them - "Sorry you were unsuccessful this time."

Us - "Ok, can you tell us where in our application we fell down, so we can improve and learn for the next opportunity"

Them - "We had such a high volume of applicants, we are not in a position to give feedback on your application. Keep doing the incredible work you do. "

I'll keep knocking on the door, doing the work. This is too important to stop. Theres too many children falling through the cracks in this Country. I'll find a way. There's work to do.

If you can support our work, by sponsoring a programme for a DEIS school or a group of children in a community that needs it. Please DM us.

If you don't know, we are a social enterprise bringing inclusive and accessible food education programmes to primary schools in DEIS areas. In simple terms, we run children's cookery classes, turning classrooms into kitchens. Please hit the follow button, we would really appreciate it. by @learnlocalcookery

🤸‍♀️🍲 Food & Movement 🤸🍅

We are having super engagement with the group of children attending our Food & Movement Sessions.
Everyone getting involved and learning through Physical Literacy & Movement.
Our Health Lieracy & food piece had children working on their fine motor skills, cutting & prepping, vegetables for their delicious soup, with some brown bread to top it off.

Food & movement Initiative is supported by @neic_dublin

You don't need a weighing scales for everything. Yes sometimes bread and pastry needs to be meticulous but this doesn't.

I want to make cooking skills accessible to every child, why? Because too many children will never get the opportunity.

Brown soda bread - this is still the same recipe i have used forever and a day. Its basic and it works. This makes 2 mini loaves or one large .5lb loaf

Ingredients - use a standard coffee mug as a measure.

1.5 Mugs brown wholemeal flour
.5 Mug white self raising flour
.5 tsp bread soda
.5 tsp salt
25g ish butter. (Enough for 3-4 slices of bread) cubed.
1 mug buttermilk or sour milk or natural yoghurt

Mix dry ingredients and rub the butter into the dry mix until it looks like breadcrumbs.

Make a well in the centre and pour your liquid. Dont add it all at once, you may not need it all!

Gently, using a fork bring the bread together into a soft dough ball. Stop mixing when it comes together.

Turn out on a floured worktop and split into 2 ir keep as one large ball. Knead lightly into a ball and press into a circle. Cut a cross in the top, not all the way through.

Bake in a hot preheated overln 180c fan 40 mins for small rounds. 50 - 1 hour for a large round. Tap on the bottom to check for a hollow sound - thats how to tell it's baked through! by @learnlocalcookery

🏃‍♀️🍅 Food & Movement 🍒💃

Two Social Enterprises come together, so much can happen💫

@littlefitnessire @learnlocalcookery are two social enterprises working on a combined programme for children. We work socio economically disadvantaged areas where food poverty and homelessness rates are high. Children living in small spaces have little space to play and move, nowhere to share a family meal, or learn about movement, play and food.

Through practical, engaging sessions, children will be able to:

🤸🏼‍♀️Move and play in a safe, welcoming environment.
🏃‍♀️Develop positive relationships with physical activity from an early age.
🥦Learn about food and cooking through hands-on experiences.
🥪Explore healthy, affordable and culturally relevant food.
🍽Develop confidence and practical life skills.
👭Experience the social benefits of preparing and sharing a meal together.
🫶Build positive connections with other children, families and their local community

Thankful for the continued support of the @neic_dublin team 💙

Oh things kids say 😂 they all made their own wheaten soda bread mini loaves, and they teamed up to make delicious vegetable soup. Week one ✅️

"I don't even like that soup normally but this one is lovely with the bread"

It's on us, to expose kids to real, whole ingredients if we are to give them a head start before it's too late. If they are never shown its not their fault. Same goes for adults. Cooking is vanishing. A few basics skills can change the life path of a family.

Four years in. Just Four.

The most fulfilling four years of an almost 20-year career in food and hospitality.

And the more time I spend doing this work, the more I realise that it’s still hospitality.
It’s empathy. It’s compassion. It’s creating a space where people feel welcome, valued and seen. It’s sharing an experience — and sometimes, simply reminding someone that they matter.

There are some absolutely incredible chefs, educators and people involved in the work we do with Learn Local, and I’m incredibly grateful for every one of you. For your time, your generosity, your belief in people and your willingness to share what you know.

Because it doesn’t matter where you are in your life. It doesn’t matter where you were born, where you grew up, or what opportunities you’ve had — or haven’t had.

Everyone deserves a seat at the table.

Four years on, I’m prouder than ever to be doing this work. by @learnlocalcookery
