did you know Modhesh, the sunny mascot of Dubai Summer Surprises, was created by a Filipino creative Romy Miclat? (and the new redesign? also a Filipino yes)

what started as my go-to factoid and a lil sticky note on my writing studio wall @baytalmamzar has evolved into a postcard as part of Rays, Ripples, Residue @421.online on view and up for grabs till 26 April 2026 💫

A history that shaped the Gulf. A community that rarely sees itself reflected back.

Afro-descendant presence in this region runs deep — in music, in language, in practice, in family. And yet the archive is thin.

This workshop is an invitation to fill in the gaps. Facilitated by Farah Fawzi Ali (@learnthuman), participants will use zine-making alongside photography, writing, and collage to document lived experience, family memory, and cultural history. Each zine becomes a small, portable archive of the Afro-Khaleej story.

Bring what you carry: photographs, documents, ephemera, fragments of memory. All other materials provided.

This workshop is designed for and centred around the Afro-Khaleej community.

decided to try out making mini collages on a daily basis, here's what I made so far 🌿

while it is more of a collage every other day situation rn, it has been a cool exercise to generate and create, playing with different colors, and expand my collaging into more materials and styles, and encouraged me to work on other creative projects

Introducing the Faire Trade Community Journal!

Faire Trade has always been about interactions between people, whether it be material exchanges, or knowledge sharing, or shared connections within our pop-ups. At the start of 2026, we explored another analog medium of exchange, the journal.

Journals have always been an intimate endeavor, something you do alone and content of its pages usually only known to you. But concepts like junk journaling and sisters of the travelling journal have offered the opportunity of experiencing and filling journals collectively, which we really wanted to experiment with here.

This journal, like our pop-ups, is an open space, for you to let go, swap, share and create with others. There are various prompts and pages for you to respond and contribute to. There are swap pages with stickers and stationary you can give and take. The blank pages are an invitation for you to create your own prompts, leave a message, or whatever else you'd like to do 🌿

You can find our community journal on the table of every pop-up we host from now on. In our last couple pop-ups, we have started an archive of items swapped, doodles and portraits drawn and blackout poetry performed. We can't wait to see what gets added into this little book 😊🌹 by @learnthuman

Hosted a collaging workshop for my GSU classmates, exploring the theme of Settling/Unsettling, as part of a museum praxis project by me and @abbyabushmeis . The project aims to invite community-supported activities to both unsettle and settle memories, emotions, and personal histories to linger, congregate, and pause, allowing life and community to disrupt, transform, add, and remove their own traces, marks, and materials onto various mediums.

As our environment unfurls and unsettles, introspection while collaging helps us learn how to stay with the trouble that may surround us and actively create together in reflexive, adapative and mindful ways 🌱

We each made individual collages then worked on a collaborative collage across several rounds of 'add something and pass it along' (slide 14) 🌿 it was also just great to engage in reflection beyond our closed readings and assignments for a change 🙏🏻

Hosted a cat-themed zine workshop as part of the feline festivities of @nehavora1 and @azimgh 's Becoming Kimmy book launch @baytalmamzar @bambampublishing last weekend 🐈💛🧡💜

Like Becoming Kimmy, this activity was dedicated to enshrining and memorializing the cats that found us. Thanks to the cosmic delivery service, the Cat Distribution System, the universe randomly assigns you a feline encounter(s) at some point in your life. Whether it was a cat you once crossed paths with or one that has infiltrated your home indefinitely, we made 8-fold page zines that recounts the encounter 😺🔮🌿

We also had the BAM cat pick his favourite zine, and the winner got a free copy of becoming Kimmy (some kibble bribery was involved lol)

It's been such a pleasure to host a creative workshop after such a long time, and we all fully embraced honoring Kimmy and all the cats that have touched our lives ✨ taken in Al Mamzar by @learnthuman
