Production server disk is full.

The team panics and deletes the biggest log file… but the disk space still doesn’t come back.

This happens because the application process is still holding the file open, even after the file is deleted.

You can find it using:

lsof | grep deleted

If you cannot restart the service in production immediately, SREs sometimes use this temporary trick:

: > /proc/PID/fd/FD

This clears the open file descriptor and frees the disk space without stopping the process.

Terraform failed. What do you check first?

A lot of troubleshooting time gets wasted because we start changing Terraform code before understanding where the failure actually happened.

init failed? Look at the backend, provider, network and authentication.
plan failed? Check configuration, variables, data sources and dependencies.
apply failed? Think RBAC, quota, conflicts and provider/API errors.
State issue? Investigate the state before touching the infrastructure.

The key is simple:

Read the full error → identify the failing stage/resource → investigate the dependency → then make the change.

AI can write Terraform.
AI can build CI/CD pipelines.
AI can generate application code, tests, and even debug failures.

So… is AI going to replace DevOps Engineers?

Not exactly.

The real difference is execution vs accountability.

AI can generate infrastructure — but who verifies that the database isn't publicly accessible? Who decides whether an application actually needs access to Key Vault? Who designs for backups, disaster recovery, regional failures, monitoring, security policies, and least-privilege access?

That's where engineers still matter.

The DevOps Engineer of the future shouldn't spend months memorizing commands that AI can generate in seconds.

Instead, learn:

• Cloud architecture
• Networking
• Security
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
• CI/CD
• Observability
• Failure modes & disaster recovery
• How to validate AI-generated infrastructure

AI isn't a reason to stop learning DevOps.

It's a reason to learn DevOps differently.

Become the engineer who understands the system deeply enough to question, validate, and safely deploy what AI generates.

Then AI becomes your force multiplier.

Will AI replace DevOps engineers?

Anthropic is reportedly planning more than $518 BILLION in AI infrastructure spending over the next decade.

AI can automate a lot of the work we do — writing scripts, generating Terraform, creating configs and helping troubleshoot.

But AI still needs infrastructure.

Compute. Networking. Storage. Security. Observability. Reliability.

The opportunity isn't in memorizing more DevOps tools.

It's in understanding how infrastructure actually works.

How do you deploy a new application version without downtime?

One common approach is Blue-Green Deployment.

🔵 Blue → Current production version
🟢 Green → New application version

Deploy and test the new version in Green while users continue using Blue.

Once Green is healthy, switch production traffic to it.

If something goes wrong, traffic can quickly be switched back to Blue.

The key idea: Don’t replace the version serving users until the new version is ready.

Everyone is building AI agents.

But here's the question nobody talks about enough:
