(1/12) Artist and Press traces the creative journey of Ignatius Hermawan Tanzil as an artist, designer, and collector of Indonesia’s visual culture.

Growing up within the family’s printing environment, Hermawan Tanzil encountered type, illustration, production, packaging, labels, advertisements, and everyday visual language long before design became a formal discipline. The printing press became more than a family business, it became a space of learning, observation, and discovery.

Through this experience, he developed an understanding that visual identity is not only shaped by individual ideas, but also by practice, repetition, production, and the cultural landscape around us.

A journey where printing becomes archive, design becomes practice, and everyday visuals become part of Indonesia’s collective memory.

Book Launch of Ditanggoeng Tida Loentoer ARTJOG 2026 Yogyakarta, Monday, 27 July 2026

Ditanggoeng Tida Loentoer was officially launched at ARTJOG 2026. The book is part of an ongoing research project exploring Indonesia’s visual design history through archives, trademarks, printed ephemera, and everyday graphic culture.

The event brought together friends, colleagues, and members of the creative community from Yogyakarta, Bandung, Jakarta, Malang, and many other cities. Their presence made the occasion especially meaningful.

Sincere appreciation goes to the entire ARTJOG team for their generous support, and to the discussion panel: Ignatius Hermawan Tanzil (Author & Designer), Farah Wardani (Curator, ARTJOG 2026), Io Woo (Studio Woork), Ong Hari Wahyu (Visual Artist, Art Director & Graphic Designer), M. Cahyo Novianto (Architect, Researcher & Architectural Archivist), and Santi Ariestyowanti (Indieguerillas), whose perspectives enriched the conversation.

During the discussion, Farah Wardani also spoke about the Ditanggoeng Tida Loentoer installation, currently on view at ARTJOG 2026. Conceived as a spatial response to the book, the installation takes the form of a traditional Toko Rupa-Rupa (Toko Klontong), translating the book’s research into an immersive exhibition experience through the collaboration of artists, designers, and researchers.

Ditanggoeng Tida Loentoer exhibition at @artjog.id is now officially open to the public.

Come and experience the visual history of Indonesian graphic design through more than 500 visual artefacts collected from 87 cities across 20 provinces. From trademarks, labels, and packaging to logos created between the 1920s and 1960s, the exhibition reveals how visual culture evolved long before graphic design was recognized as a profession or academic discipline.

Ditanggoeng Tida Loentoer presents more than 500 carefully selected visual artifacts from the collection of Ignatius Hermawan Tanzil, gathered from 87 cities across 20 provinces in Indonesia. These archives reveal that design practices had long existed and evolved well before graphic design was recognized as a profession or an academic discipline.

Emerging from marketplaces, shops, printing houses, factories, ports, and the everyday spaces of society, these artifacts document how Indonesians have shaped identities, communicated ideas, and imagined themselves through visual language.

More than a collection of archives, Ditanggoeng Tida Loentoer is a visual atlas that maps the richness and diversity of Indonesia's visual traditions across regions and generations.
