Men's mental health isn't a soft topic on a jobsite. It's a safety topic. 🦺

The men on your crew are trained to survive the job. Nobody trained them to survive the drive home.

Bill McCamley ran New Mexico's unemployment system through the pandemic β€” and survived his own suicide attempt in the middle of it. Today he teaches suicide prevention to union construction workers across New Mexico and Texas.

By his own count, the men in those classes are roughly 16x more likely to die by suicide or overdose than by a jobsite accident.

His reframe: tough guys do tough, hard things. Dealing with what's in your head is a hard thing. πŸ’ͺ

And "how you doing, bro?" never gets an answer. Bill makes every class practice the real question out loud β€” because it's hard the first time.

One real conversation this week with someone you lead. Not a status check.

If you or someone you lead is struggling: in the US and Canada, call or text 988, 24/7.

Workplace culture is why your best people keep quitting β€” not money. πŸ‘€

By the time a great employee is interviewing somewhere else, you already lost them. The notice is just the paperwork.

SHRM found that toxic workplace culture drove an estimated $223 billion in turnover costs over five years, and that 58% of employees who quit over culture said their manager was the main reason. 😬

So here's the move almost nobody runs: stop waiting for the exit interview. Run a stay interview. Ask one of your best people, "What would make you leave, and what makes you stay?" β€” then fix one thing they name.

A 20-minute stay interview beats a 3-month replacement search. Do that math.

Four more tactics in this week's episode, including the one most leaders walk past: your best people leave when you let your worst behavior stay. Your A-players are watching what you tolerate. 🎯

Succession planning isn't an exit task β€” it's a training decision you're making right now. πŸ‘€

John Scott is a CPA and tax partner at a nearly 500-person firm, and he says you can diagnose a company's health with one number: the average age of the leadership group.

40s = healthy. You've got 60-year-olds, 30-year-olds, and a real pipeline between them.

Late 50s = nobody trained a replacement, and you're about to get acquired.

His firm set a mandatory retirement age of 65 β€” so the people coming up can actually see the chair open.

And if you want a promotion from him? Write the case for how you're already doing the next job. πŸ”‘

Tactic 3: make growth visible. Great people don't leave for money nearly as often as they leave because they stop growing. Give each of your best a next step they can actually see - a skill, a project, a path. by @leducleadership

Culture isn't the posters on the wall. It's what you tolerate on the worst day. Great units come apart not from one big blow-up, but because leaders let small things slide until the standard quietly became whatever we let happen. by @leducleadership

Stand-up meeting questions that actually catch problems β€” three forward-looking questions, and none of them is about yesterday. Leadership in practice is small rituals run well.

Today's clip walks the version:

What are you working on before the next stand-up?
What does your leader need to know, or what do you need from them?
Who else do you need to connect with before the next one?

No interrupting. No solving problems in the circle. Follow-ups happen after.

The sleeper is question three. It surfaces the handoff two people each assumed the other one owned β€” before it breaks.

Send this to whoever runs your team's morning huddle. Or save it for tomorrow's.

Which question would change your stand-up most?

Bill McCamley trains union construction crews in suicide prevention, and he makes every guy in the room practice saying the words out loud: "Are you thinking of suicide?" He says the awkwardness is the whole reason people don't ask.

Tactic 5: fix the manager, not just the perks. Ping pong tables don't keep people - good leaders do. If a whole team is bleeding talent, look hard at the person leading it, even when that person is you. by @leducleadership
