At Work Challenge accepted. Dances with Wolves, 1989. My mother recognized me (I'm on the right) from this photo in People magazine and called me to ask about it. I had no idea! I had built three robotic buffaloes in my back yard and transported them to S. Dakota in my own van for the (we thought) low budget indie film... Best movie job ever! Thanks, Kevin. In the final days of 1982 I began working on this, my very first movie job. It was a good education on how low-budget films were made Roger Corman style. Two years to the day after we set sail from Los Angeles to Hawaii, this happened. The newspaper got it wrong; I was sailing solo. Dark Star had been my home for four years and the sometime home of guests, friends and loves. Had I imagined what harm I could cause both of us, I would have been more careful with her. So it goes... by @lee.artifacts

This is the only shot I have of my two cohorts on Dark Star's crossing. Peter on the left (appropriately) and George on the right. Two quite plucky individuals I was very fortunate to have as shipmates. Pete could render the inedible quite delicious while George could divine our location to within a couple nautical miles of paradise. Fortunately the San Miguel lasted 18 days! This is also from 1981. You may think that it would be a challenge for a 28 year old CA boat bum to land a job at Pearl Harbor but you would be wrong! Working on Navy subs and frigates also required a 'Secret' clearance which I inexplicably obtained. #pearlharbor #hawaiilife taken in Oahu by @lee.artifacts

To commemorate the 1981 voyage I had these brass Sierra cups made for the three of us and our dear departed friend Kit (Christopher Perkins) who would have joined us if business had allowed him to. George, our navigator, was 65 in 1981 so is also no longer with us. Peter lives on and hopefully still knows where his cup is! by @lee.artifacts

Yesterday's post brought to mind one result from that screening of 'Dark Star'... When I came to own and live aboard this boat there seemed only one possibility for her name. Seen here in Nawiliwili, Kauai a couple months after sailing her from Los Angeles, CA to Hawaii in July, 1981.
