We are pleased to introduce two new limited-edition prints by Lee Bae, created exclusively for his exhibition ‘The In-Between’ at Perrotin Tokyo.

Rooted in his iconic ‘Brushstroke’ series, these works deepen the artist’s ongoing exploration of gesture and time. Each print captures a single instinctive motion, crystallizing breath, presence, and duration in a striking, charcoal-ink mark.

Limited to 75 editions each, ‘Brushstroke Washi 1’ and ‘Brushstroke Washi 2’ are now available at Perrotin Store Paris, New York, and Tokyo, or online, via the link in our bio.

Lee Bae’s ‘The in-between’ is now open at Perrotin Tokyo

‘The title, The In-Between, builds on Lee Bae’s approach in his previous exhibitions (including Between in New York). This “in-between” holds the convergence of East and West, abstraction and matter, gesture and memory.

The artist, who divides his time between Seoul and Paris, works within this kind of transition: between two cultures, two times, from childhood to adulthood, from the Korean countryside to his Paris studio. But in Tokyo, these black shapes confronting us in the white space may also carry another message.

조현화랑은 2월 20일부터 23일까지 미국 캘리포니아 산타모니카 공항에서 열리는 프리즈 LA 2025에 참가합니다. 올해 초 캘리포니아 산불로 개최가 불확실했던 프리즈 LA는 로스앤젤레스 예술 생태계의 회복을 위해 예정대로 진행되며, 조직위는 피해 지원을 위해 ‘LA 예술 공동체 화재 구호 기금’을 설립하고 입장료의 10%를 기부합니다.

조현화랑은 부스 C10에서 이배와 키시오 스가의 2인전을 선보입니다. 이배는 숯이라는 매체를 통해 한국 단색화의 조형적 유산을 현대적으로 재해석하고 있으며, 키시오 스가는 일본 모노하 운동을 이끈 작가로 사물과 공간의 관계를 탐구하는 조형 언어를 구축해왔습니다. 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.

Johyun Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in Frieze Los Angeles 2025, held at Santa Monica Airport from February 20 to 23. Earlier this year, the fair faced uncertainty due to the devastating wildfires that swept through California in January. However, Frieze LA will proceed as planned in support of the city’s art ecosystem. The Frieze organizing committee has established the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund to aid artists and industry professionals affected by the fires, pledging 10% of ticket proceeds to the initiative.

Frieze, which originated in London in 2003, made its Los Angeles debut in 2019. Since then, it has become a key contemporary art hub, attracting young collectors through its distinctive artist community and educational programs. Now in its sixth edition, Frieze LA 2025 will feature 96 galleries from 20 countries worldwide.

The finale of Lee Bae’s solo exhibition, 𝘓𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘥𝘦 𝘭𝘢 𝘓𝘶𝘯𝘦 𝘉𝘳û𝘭é𝘦 (𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨), will take place on February 12, 2025, at 5 PM at Cheongdo in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. As part of the 60th Venice Biennale, the exhibition was shown at the Wilmotte Foundation in Venice from April 20 to November 24, 2024. It began with the daljip taeugi ritual on February 24, 2024, in Lee Bae’s hometown of Cheongdo, marking the start of a journey that connected Venice and Cheongdo before returning to its origin to complete the cycle.

After the Biennale, Lee Bae sent the Brushstroke installations and marouflage paper back to Korea. In February 2025, the Brushstroke in the same form as in Venice will cover a small island on Cheongdo Stream, where tree branches, New Year wishes, and the marouflage paper will be burned together.

이배 작가의 개인전 <La Maison de la Lune Brûlée>의 피날레가 2025년 2월 12일 오후 5시 경북 청도의 청도천에서 개최됩니다. 제60회 베니스 비엔날레의 공식 연계 부대 전시로 베니스의 빌모트 파운데이션에서 진행되었던 전시는 작년 2월 이배 작가의 고향 청도의 전통문화 ‘달집태우기’로 시작되었습니다. 청도의 주민들이 해마다 정월 대보름에 모여 행하는 전통의례가 전시의 시작점이 되어 지구 반대편 베니스로 향한 후 다시 청도로 돌아오는 순환의 여정을 완성하는 것입니다.

비엔날레 전시 폐막 후, 이배는 전시장에 설치되었던 <붓질(Brushstroke)>과 도배에 사용된 종이를 떼어 한국으로 보냈습니다. 작년 2월, 달집태우기가 열렸던 청도천의 작은 섬 전체를 베니스 전시에서 선보인 붓질과 동일한 형태로 덮은 뒤, 그 아래에 나뭇가지와 새해 소원들, 그리고 베니스 전시를 채웠던 도배지를 넣어 함께 태울 예정입니다.

Exiting the courtyard behind the exhibition hall of the Wilmotte Foundation, visitors encounter an ephemeral path that leads toward the lagoon. This rectangular space features a ceiling covered with luminous yellow glass, amplifying the radiance of moonlit nights. As visitors navigate this expanse, the boundaries between reality and another realm blur, creating a captivating and immersive experience.

At the heart of “La Maison de la Lune Brûlée” lies a profound exploration of Eastern philosophy, contrasting with Western notions of fixed essences. As Byung-Chul Han notes, “In the far east, far more than in the west, the way things flow into each other is openly visible[…] Essence is difference. Thus, essences block transitions. Absencing is in-difference. It liquefies and un-bounds.”
Lee Bae’s work, centered on the cyclical recurrence of the daljip taeugi ritual and the use of charcoal, embodies this Eastern perspective by dissolving rigid boundaries and inviting reflection on the fluidity and impermanence of existence.
