🤝We've recruited new members to our Blue Plaques Review Panel. This panel approve or reject applications for blue plaques. We held a get-together last week where new panel members could get to know each other.

🔎 Heritage Watch! 🎊Leeds 400 special!

This month marks 400 years since the Leeds Charter was granted. Few buildings remain that were standing in Leeds in 1626. The Dovecote at Manston Hall is one of them.

🛠️Our Heritage at Risk List includes 88 buildings in Leeds worthy of preservation, but at risk of disrepair. The Dovecote at Manston Hall Farm, Manston Lane, (LS15 8AE) joined our list in 2011.

🕊️Originally designed to house pigeons or doves, this Grade II listed structure is described by Historic England as ‘a rare example of a late medieval dovecote.’ Doves and pigeons provided food for the table, feathers for the aristocratic household and manure for the estate. The former Manston Hall was owned by the Gascoigne family who were major landowners in the area for many centuries.

🪽The dovecote is recognised for its special interest by virtue of its listed status, indeed it is a very rare survivor of rural life dating from around 1500, albeit with some later additions. It is located within one of the East Leeds Extension housing sites (see planning application 21/04468 for full details). Leeds Civic Trust is concerned about the declining condition of the Dovecote and how this will be managed in the longer term.

🔨 There have been no repairs or improvements made to the structure, and whilst some of the internal nesting boxes have survived, they are exposed to the elements and at risk of further deterioration.

Our new book features a variety of stories about growing up gay, lesbian, bisexual or trans - and finding spaces in Leeds that were welcoming. Not always easy in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. One of our interviewees is Steve, who tells us about how he found his community as a teenager in pubs like the New Penny. In fact, it was so important to him, that he was instrumental in helping to get a Leeds Civic Trust @leedscivictrust blue plaque to mark the New Penny’s significance in Leeds.

“I’d read about the Vauxhall Tavern [a gay-friendly pub in London] being under threat. Given that the Penny is not that well regarded in some quarters, I thought, if we get a plaque on it by Leeds Civic Trust, it adds to the patina - saying how important it is. Because it’s probably the country’s longest operating LGBTQ venue. And I thought it’s important to mark that. I feel a sense of real pride. I think it’s important, and it’s part of history, that’s why I did it. I think it’s an important piece of Leeds gay history. It was the nascent core of what’s known as the Freedom Quarter. I think if you’re not careful, you just lose that. If you don’t show your history and show people where everything came from, people might be a bit too blasé about things, or think it doesn’t matter, and then before you know it, your rights have gone.”

👷 Planning Application

Our volunteer run Planning Committee have considered a planning application for Moorfield House, Fieldhouse Walk, Moortown, LS17 6HW.

🚧The application is for a change of use and conversion of a vacant care home to form twenty seven apartments.

✅The Planning Committee supports this application. They say this is a very detailed application and a good use of the building. The only concern is the large area of tarmacked car parking.

👷 Planning Application

Our volunteer run Planning Committee have considered a planning application for Wharfe Ghyll, Linton Common, Linton, Wetherby, LS22 4JD.

Wharf Ghyll was an attractive unlisted Arts and Crafts house designed by William Alban Jones, a prominent Leeds architect.

🚧This is a retrospective application for the demolition of existing extensions: part single-storey, part two-storey side and rear extension

❌The Planning Committee object to this application. The works, which have already started, go against the previously approved elevation plans and destroy historical external features and symmetry.

🔵 Blue Monday!

This week we're looking at our 210th blue plaque unveiled last week for Harry Guntrip!

Harry Guntrip (1901-1975) was an internationally renowned psychologist, psychotherapist, and Congregational minister whose pioneering work helped shape modern psychoanalytic thought.

Guntrip spent a significant part of his professional life in Leeds, serving first as a Congregational minister before becoming a psychotherapist and lecturer in psychiatry.

He is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in Object Relations Theory and is recognised worldwide for his influential writings on personality development, human relationships, and mental health.

His books, including Personality Structure and Human Interaction and Schizoid Phenomena, Object Relations and the Self, remain important texts in psychotherapy training today.

Beyond his academic achievements, Guntrip sought to bridge the worlds of spirituality and psychology, advocating for a compassionate and holistic approach to mental well-being.

His legacy continues through charitable trusts established in his name, supporting psychotherapy training and access to therapy.

✏️The plaque's wording is, "Dubbed an "analytic heretic", this Congregational minister, whose pastoral care for refugees inspired a career in psychoanalysis, lived here 1935-1952. At the University of Leeds, he pioneered the research and treatment of schizoid personalities, famously maintaining that "to care for people is more important than to care for ideas". 1901-1975"

🔍The plaque was unveiled on an easel and will soon be permanantly installed at Harry Guntrip's former home, 147 Cross Flatts Grove, Beeston, LS11 7BR.
