First day back in Jake Dickey’s @leerafel Virtual Production class at SLCC! @saltlakecc

Stoked to be back building on everything we learned last semester, and catching up on all the VP tech developments that happened over the summer. This space is moving at a truly breakneck pace, and it’s exciting to be part of it.

Looking forward to another semester of learning, experimenting, and figuring out how to put these tools to work in real-world filmmaking.

But really, I’m just here for the great Frustum jokes.

Continuing the journey after our latest ARTIFEX cave sequence previz deep dive.

Getting to pressure-test these ideas at SLCC alongside a truly world-class team of creators has been nothing short of incredible. Huge gratitude to Prof. Jake Dickey, Prof. David Lehleitner, and Jonathan Olsen (Johnny-O) for building an environment that’s genuinely on the cutting edge of virtual production. SLCC deserves serious recognition for investing in the future of ICVFX and Unreal-driven filmmaking.

These sessions are shaping the next phase of ARTIFEX. The goal is real and within reach: shoot on location this year while capturing real-world photogrammetry from the cave environment, then seamlessly blend that data into our Unreal Engine world, keeping it grounded, tactile, and cinematic.

Massive shoutout to my fellow students as well. The problem-solving and back-and-forth has been invaluable. This kind of collaborative brain trust is exactly how these ambitious ideas turn into executable plans.

Its still early in the process. We’re still exploring and experimenting, but the path forward is getting clearer, and it’s incredibly exciting to see how close these worlds are to colliding.

When it comes to pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling, few can rival the ingenuity of Jake Dickey. As our VFX Supervisor, Jake brought a wealth of expertise and a forward-thinking approach to ARTIFEX, elevating its supernatural elements into a visually stunning reality.

Jake worked closely with Joel Petrie from Parking Garage Pictures to bring the script’s ambitious effects to life. Their collaboration was a clinic in problem-solving, using the latest technology to craft visuals that are both innovative and grounded in storytelling.

Jake isn’t just a leader in the field of visual effects, he’s a pioneer in virtual production.

As the Director of Virtual Production & ICVFX with Redman Movies and Stories @redmanmovies and Park City Film Studios @parkcityfilmstudios , and teaching virtual production at SLCC @saltlakecc , Jake is working to standardize production studio environments across Redman’s Studios, Salt Lake Community College, and Utah Tech University, all using state-of-the-art ROE LED panels. Jake is helping to build a student-to-pro pipeline that ensures Utah filmmakers are prepared for the industry’s future.

On ARTIFEX, Jake’s expertise transformed challenges into breakthroughs. His ability to blend technical mastery with creative storytelling made him an integral part of our team and a key architect of our film’s visual identity.

Jake Dickey isn’t just a VFX Supervisor, he’s a mentor, a visionary, and a force for progress in the Utah filmmaking community.

Okay, here's the finished piece. I love how this turned out! This was produced and written by the wonderful Brandi Brown @tahoeproductionhouse for the Nevada Primary Care Association @nvpca (NVPCA.ORG). All of the artwork was illustrated and painted digitally by hand in #adobefresco , and the animation utilizes #aftereffects with #duikbassel 16. Also, a special thanks to @aaronblaiseart for his excellent animation/illustration tutorials that I picked up on creatureartteacher.com to brush up on "Disney style" especially for this project. This might not end up as the final NVPCA approved version, but I wanted to share.

Been working on this for the last two weeks. It was supposed to just be a standard MoGraph ad, but I got inspired and went a bit overboard. This is a little car character I came up with for an ad I'm working on this week. This is all just secondary "sitting here being alive" animation generated through AE expressions--no keyframes here. I'll add the primary animations and then keep some of this organic random movement running over the top of that.
