How much of your martial arts school’s revenue is going toward payroll?

It’s a number every school owner should know.

The data shows average payroll at approximately 34% of revenue, while around 40% of schools are spending 40% or more.

And the profitability numbers are worth paying attention to.

Schools operating with lower payroll percentages were far more likely to produce significant profit.

That doesn’t mean “pay your staff less.” It means understanding what your payroll is actually costing the business and making sure staffing expenses are sustainable relative to revenue.

What happens if the average student stays for 8 months... and you turn that into 16?

You don't necessarily need twice as many leads.

You don't need twice as many sales.

You simply keep more of the students you're already bringing through the door.

Cabot Trail Classic was first of its kind this way. A turnout of 65 competitors which is not bad for these parts and a game attitude from all that came out. It will grow, as Jiu Jitsu is growing steadily through the incredible change it does for people in their lives.

The tournament coaches, refs, competitors and spectators were probably as kind and as sportsmanlike as it gets. The energy was amazing.

My client and long time friend Joe Doherty was the promoter of the tournament and is also the owner of Cheticamp Martial Arts. Something that Joe and his wife Crystal are very purposeful with is their care for everyone. They took the time to speak to every person who wanted to speak about the tournament while also making sure their tournament ran ahead of schedule. They also took part in a fundraiser at the same time to help raise funds for the local hockey team to have new jerseys. They care, about everyone.

I am personally very proud of them. The courage and determination required for an event like this needs to be on point to pull it off well, and they did better than that- it was excellent.

I always believe there are lessons with everything we do in our life, the best ones here are: take care of your community, have a solid plan and work your butt off and you’ll always be ok 😊 great work👊💥✊🙏🫶🫡 taken in Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia by @legacymaconsulting

Joe is committed to not only helping others change their lives but is also focused creating the maximum impact on his community and today we assist him with the @cabot.trail.classic which is the first BJJ tournament to make it this way on the Cabot trail. Joe’s success in his first year has been amazing and even purchased the building the gym is in, I can’t wait to see how many more lives he changes in his second year! by @legacymaconsulting

Moving monthly retention from roughly 94.5% to 97% may seem like a small improvement, but over time those extra students staying on the mats compound.

Over a three-year period, that difference can translate into a 60% increase in revenue.
