As a transformational organization, we are unapologetic about our mission to nurture and build future African American leaders—remaining steadfast even in the midst of this critical time in our nation’s history. Originally founded in 1938, during another dark period for our people, The Great Depression—simply reiterates that this is where we thrive. What the powers that be mean for our detriment, only fuels our unwavering passion to serve our communities and to strive to meet the resilience and excellency under duress that our ancestors and founders persevered before us.
As North Carolina’s own, late-great Maya Angelou once said, “Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” Her sentiments emphasize that the human spirit possesses a power that cannot be extinguished by outside forces, relies not on external validation, and most importantly—serves as a reminder to keep shining, remaining true to oneself—particularly during difficult times.
On this 88th anniversary of our inception, as a proud member of the Captivating Capital City Chapter, in the Marvelous Mid-Atlantic Region, I endeavor to honor the legacy of the mothers who established this collective dedication to leadership, service, and strengthening children and the Black family. We do this by our commitment to not only nurturing future African-American leaders—our own, as well as others—but through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving, and civic duty.
