An ode to Olivia Newton John. Bayreuth Festival 2023. A sweltering 34 degrees. I came off stage to a WhatsApp video from my sister saying ONJ had passed and I was taken aback by how much of a gut punch it was. I wept. Where were you when you heard? “Hopeless Devoted to You” was everyone’s hairbrush song. And quite a painful torch song to the icon she was. Grease and Xanadu were on repeat in chez Chocolat. Vale, ONJ. Loved and missed. ❤️‍🩹💞 . . . . #love #olivianewtonjohn #hope #theatre #cabaret #singer #restinpeace #queer #black #icon #heartbroken #pink by @legateauchocolat
Attitude’s Culture Award goes to… . . . #black #fat #fem #queer #love #lgbtq #smile #proud #culture by @legateauchocolat
“This Is My Life” for and to Dame Shirley Bassey. Honouring the 86 year old legend at the Attitude Awards last night. Many might not know this most nuanced detail; both DSB and I are of dual heritage- she’s Welsh/Nigerian, I’m British/Nigerian. When the cameras weren’t furiously snapping, I whispered this in her ear; I British Nigerian and you’re Welsh “Nigerian”- she turned and hugged me. AGAIN. I said “Thank you, Dame Shirley” and she said “no, thank you” - it was then I lost it. I made sure to cry it all out before that I may properly pay tribute to an icon whose shoulders many stand on. Thank you, Attitude for the august privilege and to house of Chocolat; my sis- Winnie, Liz, Connor, Gia, Jo, Jared, Phillip Shaw, David Merriman whose musical choices always capture my soul and intention… with you, I’m never a drag queen. Your love, friendship and skill anchored me last night. “Don’t you ever sing that song again”- she said, through tears, as she accepted her award and emailed the day after to repeat the sentiment. ALL this happened after BOY GEORGE had introduced me, Russell Tovey and Mawaan had presented me with the culture award AND Amanda Holden (who’d fallen in love with my sister) burst into my dressing room to tell me she run her DNA and found Nigeria in it. SHE was a comedy sketch. “Nigeria but also Germany so… you know there’s A LOT to process. Pointing to the kettle in the dressing room- are you having that cos if not, I will” - she kept going till her husband, Chris, had to yank her out of the room. HILARIOUS! What a night. None of it quite makes sense. One day, it might. I shared it with my loved ones that we may all mark what we knew would be a life event and it was. . . . . #love #drama #black #proud #gay #beautiful #queer #blue by @legateauchocolat
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. Being British Nigerian means hearing fellow countrymen singing “Rule Britannia! Britannia rule the waves. Britons shall never be slaves”. Um, some of us were. As a direct descendant of one & 2 weeks before Nigeria’s Independence Day - this jussssst great. Bravo. Meanwhile, @yale and @oxford_uni, with @pomegranatearts, commissioned a new song, for the Bark Of Millions, by my dear friends, @taylormacnyc & @mattraymusic ; “AREA SCATTER” - a Nigerian transwoman who was venerated. 2 nights ago, as part of the book tour, we performed songs from The Bark Of Millions, at Yale- we screamed LOVE, QUEER & NIGERIA. Huzzah! mm@i Next stop, Boston. 5 shows @artsemersoon 🥳❤️ Also, the actual ANDRE DE SHIELDS???!!! I can’t. #africa #love #fashion #queer #home by @legateauchocolat

In May, I performed ‘Spirittuals’ with my elders; Allyson Devenish and David McAlmont at the Lowry, Manchester. The press release, for this show, featured these words “as a direct descendant of a slave…” The show itself featured a song called “Another man done gone” with the lyrics “They killed another man” The first recording of this song was made in 1940 but the composition dates back further as it was a “work song” A white person, from the publication, a youngish perspective, gave the show 3.5 stars a review that I never read because I did not have to. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. You neither have the range nor permission, to review this work. It is incumbent on the journalist, and publication, to litigate if they should. Our empathic answer was no. What you heard, as songs, were (are) words bequeathed to us, by our ancestors, memorialising what they went through and transmitting a warning of what we could too. The hope is the words aren’t prophetic. In 2026, Jason Arday is evidence that they are. Who needs a “youngish perspective” of a lived experience? Sit. Down. #black #jasonarday #race #queer #theatre by @legateauchocolat
People HATE to see a unicorn. The intersection of race and invisible disabilities IS REAL. “Why are you in the medical/disability queue” Presents disability pass “Because I have a disability” “Then you should wear it” “Or you could just do your job and check my passport after I’ve demonstrated why I’m in this queue” “Don’t give me attitude” “Don’t waste my time. Let’s keep this moving” Sabi, duty manager, comes over and successfully diffuses the situation. “Can we talk calmly in the corner” “Sure. This is a teachable moment” “You see how I’m not raising my voice?” “You see how he raised his?” “Our staff are working under enormous pressure” “It’s 655. Planes are allowed to land, at Heathrow from 6am. Some of us have been on a 24 hr flights” For transparency and honesty, mine was 7 BUT 2 weeks ago, it was 36 from New Zealand “I understand. It would just help our staff if you wore the lanyard” “Sure. But as soon as he asked, I demonstrated my disability- why was there need for any comeback including him saying to you “he’s got an attitude.” - his language was not coded enough.” “I understand.” “What’s your name?” “I’m the duty manager.” “That’s clear. I’d like to say thank you. “I’m sabi” “I’m George. Thank you, Sabi” I’m really not sorry that @heathrow_airport’s training’s failed in not expanding your perception or invited you to abandon stereotype because the facts are people with disabilities can also look like this AND your use of the adjective “attitude” is MUCH louder than you think. It’s screaming. Thank you, Sabi. Have a word. Please. Exhausting. Exhausted The disability - ‘medical fatigue’, exhaustion, from heart disease, has entered the chat. #disability #london #home #black #fashion by @legateauchocolat

June. I’ve finally paused long enough to say “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, with @operahollandpark, was magic. A friend, who I haven’t spoken to in over a decade; @soprano_melodie text and said “babe, the caterpillar gets to do one song, wanna do it” - I think I can just about fit it in as I’m rehearsing and performing Bark of Millions with Taylor Mac, in Oxford. Through a seismic life event (another one) the company said “we’ve got you”. Beth (company manger) Dom & Frances conductor and repetiteur, Monique, James, and the bloody cast who stepped up so hard, so fast and so brilliantly… I’m forever in your debt. And to my dear @gspotgigi - my wig witch. My friend. My magic. Said “you shall go to the ball” and made this wig in a day. Babe thank you for ALWAYS saying yes. “The world is bursting with wonder…” it really wasn’t and because of ALL of you, it really was. Thank you. #opera #love #summer #grief #joy by @legateauchocolat
