Tomorrow, 7/30, and Friday, 7/31, will be my final workshops with @washingtonsquarepk as one of their July resident artists. These last two classes, “Seeing My Neighbor: Part One/Part Two”will be a callback to last year’s residency classes: mixed media portraits inspired by @bronxfaces 💗 catch us in Scrabble Plaza from 1-3 PM - free materials and all skill levels welcome!

This August will make 10 years since I started Bronx Faces after graduating from undergrad. It’s heartwarming to be able to share its core lessons and material exploration (and some new interview questions!) with others in a public workshop like this🌸

In our day to day lives, who do we share space with? A train line? A park? How can we strengthen relationships with these neighbors - human, plant, animal - and care for them as a part of us and our shared world? For me, this residency expanded that question towards these life forms and our collective environment.

It makes me think of that part in Jenny Odell’s “How to Do Nothing” where she says that she doesn’t feel she really “knows” an area until she “meets” its natural flora and fauna. (😭💓)

If any of this resonates with your spirit, I hope you can join us tomorrow and Friday for our last two mixed media workshops 🌟 and be sure to check out the art workshops at WSP on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 1-3 PM until October 🍂 taken in Washington Square Park by @legnini.art

Midnight Mass. 👥🎆🪩👥🌃📵Made with acrylic paint, wood, chickenwire, mirrored tile, paper mache clay, light molding paste, and extra coarse pumice gel. 10 3/8 x 5 3/8 x 7. 2026.

Midnight Mass is the sacred space of gathering on a close-knit dance floor with familiar faces and friends 🫂 We gather for the sake of being together, becoming a part of something greater than ourselves through a collective effervescence.

The shrine shifts its interior reflected light dependent on its environment. This not only speaks to the multiple spaces and places where we can gather around music—a bar, a block party, an apartment—but how these gatherings radiate light by those who intentionally fill it. Come dance and get off ya phone! (😝💗✨) by @legnini.art

The Weekend 🎾🏃🏻‍♀️ graphite on paper, 11x14”Another memory mined from childhood.

I was a just asked why I’ve been making more drawings lately. I’ve often wondered over the years about my practice: what happens when I strip away the mixed media, collage, and assemblage? What remains at the core of the work? Drawing is a return to that foundation.

In a theology elective in undergrad (fun fact - that was my minor!), the brilliant Tom Beaudoin shared the concept of ‘kenosis’, which he described as “emptying oneself out in order to fill oneself back up again”. That has stayed with me for years, and I feel a kind of ~material kenosis~ happening in my return to drawing✍🏼

Another answer to the drawing question is that it was way too cold to go to the studio in January and February, and so I drew at home……. buttttttttt I think two things can be true at once😝🌬️🥶 taken in Bronx, NY by @legnini.art
