How do we capture a moment in time? What can images tell us about memory and perception?

First year students in the “What is Reality?” class created cyanotype images after learning about the history of photography and the science of human memory.

Working with this camera-less form of photography shows the intersection of art and psychology and enriches our understanding of reality, showing that both memory and images are unique constructions of our experiences.

Professor Almut Hupbach (Psychology) and Professor of Practice William Crow (Art, Architecture and Design) designed and co-teach What is Reality?  Students interrogate this timeless question through art and museum experiences, exploration of cognitive processes and underlying brain mechanisms, and hands-on experiential learning.

This course is one of several first-year seminars in the College of Arts and Sciences focused on Big Questions, an initiative that supports enhanced interdisciplinary teaching, learning and research at Lehigh. Four students sit outdoors near Taylor Gym, Zoellner Arts Center and Rauch Business Center at Lehigh University on a wooden bench beneath the shade of large, leafy trees on a sunny day. A paved walkway curves past the bench, leading toward a green hillside lawn. Text overlays read "CLASS OF 2030," "PHOTO ROLL 10/26 LOCAL TIME 10:00 ROUTE TYPE: CLASS," and "FIRST YEAR SEMINAR: WHAT IS REALITY?" taken in Lehigh University by @lehigh_aad

•ABOUT “THIS LAND”•
LUAG’s thought-provoking exhibition, “This Land: Reimagining the United States of America on its 250th Anniversary” resists strict definitions of “America” and “Americans” – inviting viewers to explore multiple possibilities of being, living, and understanding.

Weaving together maps, metaphor, music, and more, “This Land” draws from the LUAG collection and beyond, including historic images and artifacts from the C. F. Martin & Co. Archives.

In partnership with Lehigh Valley 250, “This Land” exhibition programming has been supported by funding from the Pennsylvania Tourism Office. We thank them for their support. by @lehigh_aad

AAD faculty member Maurizio Masi is bringing his expertise in publication design, typography, and visual storytelling to Making the Invisible Visible: Designing with Grids, a public workshop with Letterform Archive.

Over the course of two sessions, participants will explore the history and principles behind grid systems, experiment with page anatomy and typographic hierarchy, and learn how to build flexible layouts in Adobe InDesign. The workshop goes beyond following the rules to explore how structured layouts can become expressive tools for visual storytelling.

With more than 25 years of experience spanning publication design, branding, marketing, and art direction including work with Hoefler&Co. and Hearst Magazines, Maurizio brings a wealth of professional and teaching experience to the classroom.

We’re proud to see our faculty sharing their expertise with the broader design community!

WILDFLOWERS
Lehigh University & Syracuse University
Led by Hannibal Newson, Christina Chi Zhang & Lauren Scott

Shenandoah DeNardo, Chloe Cheng, Aimi Saloum, Mitchell Ertle, Catherine Sanchez, Teniece Harris, Jacob Hammer, Danna Ochoa, Carson Probert, Selina Yueh, Mia Mueller

Wildflowers begins with a custom-designed, two-way, recyclable, 3D-printed joint that connects dimensional lumber into X-shaped columns that grow from the ground like wildflowers after rain. The connections brace the columns together, creating layers of thresholds and frames that draw the eye from across the fields.

The system relies only on simple hex bolts. When removed, their only trace is three small holes drilled through otherwise untouched lumber, ready for reuse.

Meet Julia Salinero, an Undergraduate Research Assistant on the Faith & Home project.

Julia is a Design and Computer Science major who joined the Small Cities Lab to work on UI, UX, and experiential design alongside our community partners, advised by Design Professor Kevin Lahoda. Her work spans the project's digital platform, from mapping site data and church typologies to building out the interactive storytelling tools that bring congregation stories to life.

Faith & Home explores how faith communities are reimagining their land, buildings, and resources in response to the region's affordable housing crisis, translating spiritual meaning into concrete design patterns for adaptive reuse and new development.

Julia's research is supported by a 2026 Marcon Fellowship. Through this work, she's gained hands-on experience in community-facing collaborative design methods, interactive design, and data visualization, skills at the intersection of her two majors.

We are grateful for the depth Julia brings to this work and to our community partners!

From Lehigh to the Philadelphia Museum of Art!

Emma graduated from Lehigh in 2025 with a degree in Art History and minors in Museum Studies and Jewish Studies. Her three years working with the Lehigh University Art Galleries (LUAG), along with her coursework and research experiences in AAD, helped spark her passion for a career in the museum field.

After interning at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2024, Emma returned to the museum full-time as Coordinator for Leadership Annual Giving, supporting donor relations, events, communications, and outreach.

As a Bucks County native who grew up visiting the PMA, Emma’s journey back to the museum is a true full-circle moment.

Class is back in session! 📐

In Prof. Mallory Kimmel’s Three-D Design class, students are taking their kitchen designs off the page and into the real world, literally.

Working in groups, students taped their proposed kitchen layouts directly onto the floor, then stepped into their designs to explore how the spaces function at full scale. By acting out everyday movements and interactions, they’re getting a hands-on look at wayfinding, scale, proportion, and how people actually experience a space.

Sometimes the best way to understand a design is to step inside it. by @lehigh_aad

Join us at Eckert Art Gallery at Millersville University on Wednesday, September 9 for the opening reception of Field Notes, featuring AAD’s own Deirdre Murphy, alongside relief sculptures by Yvonne Love, and series of collaborative drawings created by the two artists.
Inspired by more than five decades of daily naturalist field notes kept by Yvonne’s parents, Naomi and Bill Murphy, the exhibition transforms decades of bird counts, migration patterns, and handwritten observations into a sensory exploration of environmental change, loss, and continuity.

Full house yesterday at the opening of the exhibition I co-curated with @markwonsidler in collaboration with the amazing @luartgalleries team and @martinguitar!

Titled after Woody Guthrie’s 1940 folk anthem, the show is divided into six sections – America: Reimagining the Dream, Sounds of Freedom: Reimagining Protest, Sense of Place: Reimagining the Land, Where Am I? Reimagining Maps, Flexible or Fixed? Reimagining Symbols, and The University: Reimagining Learning. Including works from the collection, loans, and artifacts from Martin Guitar, the show acknowledges that such a place is a site and a dream in becoming, in progress, unfinished, just as Guthrie perceived his songs. As he said: “I have never yet put a song on tape or a record, or wrote it down or printed it down or typed it up, or anything else that I really thought was a through and a finished and a done song, and it couldn't be improved on, couldn't be changed around, couldn't be made better.”

The exhibition will be open until Dec 4, and there will be a robust programing around the themes of the show.

Please come and check it out! by @lehigh_aad
