Michael Ackeret is a master’s student in the COE's Mental Health Counseling program with a deep commitment to serving marginalized and underserved populations. Driven by a passion for social justice in healthcare, his clinical focus spans trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, support for older adults, and LGBTQIA+ mental health.

"I was drawn to Lehigh's Mental Health Counseling program for the values of empathy, advocacy, and lifelong learning. These principles align with the kind of therapist and psychologist I hope to become, and the communities I hope to serve."

Why Lehigh?
For Michael, choosing Lehigh came down to finding an environment that balances rigorous training with a genuine commitment to social responsibility.

"I chose Lehigh because I wanted to be challenged by a program that values both academic excellence and cultural humility," Michael shares. "I knew it would prepare me to serve diverse communities with compassion, strengthen my clinical skills, and provide the foundation I need for a future Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology." For Molly Ruiz, pursuing a doctorate at Lehigh University is both a major professional milestone and a return to her roots. Originally from the Lehigh Valley and currently residing in Central Pennsylvania, Ruiz is a part-time student in the Special Education Ph.D. program, balancing graduate studies with her professional life.

Ruiz' academic pursuits are informed by her career background in school counseling. Working on the frontlines of student support sparked her passion for inclusive education and shaped her current research focus: preparing school counselors to better support K-12 students with disabilities. By investigating how to equip counselors with the right tools and training, Ruiz aims to foster more inclusive, responsive school environments that serve the needs of every learner.

When she was selecting a doctoral program, Lehigh University’s College of Education (COE) stood out as the clear choice. Ruiz was drawn to the university by its prestigious academic reputation and the program's strong emphasis on developing high-level research skills. Check out Vanesa Mora Ringle's op-ed now live on PennLive. Mental health care relies on complex human conversations that are often complicated by cultural and linguistic barriers. Rather than simply using technology to speed up treatment, Mora Ringle believes the use of AI in mental health should focus on bridging these gaps to make care more equitable and human.

Mora Ringle, assistant professor in the COE's Counseling Psychology program, and her colleagues are working on an AI tool they hope will accomplish just that. Read more at the link in our bio. by @lehigheducation
